Is it Time to Update Your Marketing Strategy?

Good marketing is essential to running any successful electrical contracting business. When customers are few and far between, it’s worth asking yourself if your marketing is up to date and if not, making some changes. Here are a few signs that a poor marketing strategy might be part of the reason you’re struggling to find work.

You Have No Idea What Your Marketing Strategy Is.

Without a strategy, it’s difficult to know how to get the best return on investment for your time and money. There are tons of books and online courses to teach you everything you need to know about successful marketing, but your best bet is to pick one or two strategies to master rather than trying to do everything at once. How much time can you commit each week? How much money are you willing to spend? Which one or two places are best to focus your energy in the current market? Answering these questions will help you build a solid marketing plan.

Your Vehicle isn’t Advertising for You.

You definitely should be using your truck or van to advertise your services. It can be a full wrap or partial vinyl lettering, but your vehicle’s most important job, after getting you back and forth, is to get the word out about your business. If your vehicle is currently unadorned, it’s time to get something on it. If it’s been a few years and the lettering is starting to peel or the colors have faded, get it redone so customers know you’re still active and taking care of business.

You’re Not Online.

Newspaper ads, radio ads, and business cards are all good ways to market locally, but if they’re your only method, you’re probably missing out on a lot of business opportunities. If you haven’t already built your online presence, it’s time to start. Here are some things you should be doing:

Claim or create your Google business listing. This will allow you to show up as a business listing in search results when someone does a search for electricians in your area. It also puts you on Google maps and allows customers to review you. It’s very easy to set up and add contact information and business hours.

Have a Facebook business page. Facebook makes it easy to set up and use a business page. Once you’ve created your page, however, you’ll want to do some research to decide how much time and energy you want to put into your page. You can’t simply create a page and write post after post about how great you are and why customers should choose you and expect to get business. Facebook has an algorithm that will make it so posts that are too “salesy” get filtered out of your customers’ newsfeeds. There’s a learning curve to doing Facebook right, especially with ads, so it pays to take the time to learn the strategies and not just start posting blindly. Even if you want to put zero effort into your Facebook business page, you should still have one. It’s another place customers can leave you reviews, and a review is almost as good as a person-to-person referral.

Use online paid ad options. Advertising with Google Ads is a great way to get new leads if you have a website. With pay-per-click advertising, you’ll select keywords relevant to you and write an ad that will show up at the top of Google search results when someone searches for those words. You can even target an audience based on time of day and what type of device they’re using. Best of all, you only pay if someone actually clicks on the ad link and goes to your site.

Facebook ads can be another good place to advertise your services (and you don’t need a website), but as stated above, there’s a learning curve to doing them right, so don’t jump into creating an ad without studying the strategy of writing them and targeting customers.

If you aren’t doing any of these things, they’re a great starting point to help make your marketing work for you. Pick a few and learn to do them well, and you’ll be well on your way to bringing in more business – hopefully more than you can handle.
