Hi all, I am been a LONG TIME lurker to your forum, and I finally decided I should join. I have learned so much from the posts here that I feel like I should join and give back in any way I can. I try to stay out of the "politics" of this trade and just give good advice any way I can. I have been working in this trade for 6 years now, full time. I have a education in Computer Science and got bored with it. I have worked with electricity on and off since I was 16. I just recently obtained my Master License in Poughkeepsie, NY and now waiting for a NYS fire alarm license to come in the mail. I have my own Business and am now in my 3rd year. The market is weird now, but I keep myself busy. I usually work by myself but have a few guys I use on an as needed basis.

Looking forward to sharing with all of you...

Joe Desole ... I know I mispelled hello!

I just happened to stumble onto your cool site tonight and am quite interested in checking out all that it has to offer. I'm kinda kicking myself that I didn't find something like this before, too much web-browsing time spent looking at motorcycles(that I can't afford!):icon_cheesygrin:

Hi all,

I hoping you might offer some advice. I'm currently employed (for now) in a totally unrelated field, and am looking for a 2nd career as Plan B. After doing some of my own home electrical work, I'm wondering whether a future as a licensed electrician in Massachusetts might be an option.

But here's my dilemma - everything I've seen so far seems to require heavy-duty time commitments that would make learning the trade pretty difficult without giving up my current job. Is it possible to train part-time to become an electrician? Would a journeyman even consider a moonlighting apprentice?

I'm not looking to take any shortcuts - I have a great deal of respect for the trade - but don't want to wave goodbye to my job yet either. Just trying to figure out how to broaden my skills in case the current career path goes south (by choice or circumstance). Any suggestions?

Hello all!

I found the site while browsing the web and it seems like a great place to find some info that I'm looking for.
Is there anyone in North Carolina that can tell me what the work situation is like there, preferably the Greensboro area? I've been looking online and there seems to be some commercial work going on there, I see lots of ads seeking mechanics and mid-level electricians.
I'm inquiring because I want to get out of Florida.
I'm currently working and we do have work that's keeping everyone busy, but I just hate Florida and and want a new start. Why NC? Well, I have a friend who told me about NC and after I began looking online and seeing that there does seem to be work there, I think I want to go there.
Can anyone let me know anything? If a description of skills are helpful for a point in the right direction that's fine, right nw I'm just trying to keep this post as short as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Hi and thanks for visiting the thread. My name is Eric. I'm 23 years old and looking to be an apprentice. i called like every company in the yellowpages to find out that none would hire me, but a few days i get a call back from one that would be willing to hire me. I have no previous electrical work experience. I currently work at CVS Pharmacy, which is a steady job to pay bills, but i'm a little worried about going into the electrical business b/c almost all the electricians i called said that "things were slow right now." I would hate to take this job and leave a secure job b/c I have to support my wife who doesn't work. He evidently has at least two crews so maybe he is successful and busy? I asked the electrician what were the chances that i would get 40 hours every week, and he said i would as long as it doesn't rain much. I am meeting with him this week to talk with him more.

My brother in law said it would be best to get into commercial electrical, i guess b/c it is probably more of a secure job than the residential?

Do you think i should take this residential contractor job so that i can get my foot in the door and be one step closer to eventually becoming an electrician?

Also, what is the difference between a helper and an apprentice?

Thank you so much and i look foward to hearing from you!!

Eric
