Got a call today from an engineering group designing a new industrial park here. They wanted me to get an inspection on a meterbase that they had installed which, for some reason, the PoCo said they could install themselves. When they called the PoCo to come out and run the UG service feed they told them they needed to get it inspected which would take an EC. This is where I come in.

I went out there and there is a meter base mounted on the rear of a brick entrance wall and that's it?!?!?! Called the engineering group from there and asked how they planned to run the electric after it was inspected considering the meterbase would be sealed and they would not have access to the load side of it. Talk about bad planning on their part.

The PoCo is planning on installing street lights for this industrial park that the PoCo's line engineer says will take a 100 DP breaker. The engineering group also wants to install landscape lighting around the entrance gates, so I figure this will probably take another 20 DP breaker.

The engineering group and PoCo both say that the panel needs to be 200 amps. Due to space constraints I'm needing help on finding the smallest possible raintight panel I can put in.

The closest I can come up with is SQD - QO112L200GRB which is 26.25"x14.25" and using the 6 disconnect rule and not needing a main breaker.

My bro-in-law called me and he said they have a humming/sizzling noise coming from their panel. It's a 100A service with a new panel recently installed. I know there is 1 ground rod installed. He believes it's normal.
Everything seems to be working ok. I haven't went and looked at it, but I thought I would tap into a huge pool of knowledge here first. Thoughts?

I need to install a Temporary service and panel that will feed 6 job trailers that have 100 amp 120/240V panels in them. The demand load is nothing out of the ordinary, (heating, lighting, outlets, AC although I don't think it will be in use this time of year, lol). Does anyone know of a service equipment, meter, disbution panel (that can handle this load) that is 3R NEMA rated for a temporary service? Plan posting a pole for the service mast and putting the meter and panel on approved backing and setup, but don't know if I can cover it. This is all happening on a empty gravel parking lot, commercially zoned in a resdential neighborhood. I am sure there are setups out there that are for sale for just this kind of thing. Like you see in the big construction jobs that need several job trailers energized for the duration of the project. Money is not object, doing this for the government under FEMA, and yes I am a electrician. But this the toughest district with the worst AHJ inspector in the northwest, if not the entire counrty, he has over 22 inspector licences in his pocket! Want to have all my details in line.

A friend wants me to put a service on a building and I am questioning myself on the grounding part. I am going to put up a 400 amp meter base and 2- 200 Amp panels. The meter base I am getting has lugs in it to "double lug" the meter (on load side) to fee the panels. I am thinking that I need 4 ground rods--2 per panel or do I only need 2 total??? Thanks in advance....

Everyone talks about explaining to home owners that deferal pacific panels are dangerous. this pic should be a good selling point if you show a customer,
this panel was in my girlfriends aunts house the fire didnt spread anywhere else because the panel cover was on tight (i think) anyway the big melty spot is where the 100 amp main was
the photo was taken after it was torn off wall

Sorry not sure where to post this.

Just a quick question for the motor guys that are on here. What is the purpose of having 2 or more start windings on single phase AC motors? I understand that it's impossible to get rotation out of just one phase, so by adding a capacitor in seriers with the start winding we now have created the current to lead the voltage and in tern achived a "split phase" condition, and maximun starting torque is developed.

I can make sence of why there would be a need for mulitple run windings since each run winding would be connected to let's say 2 stator poles and another could be connected to 4 stator poles in order to achive different speeds. But start windings..... Hmmmm:no:

Thanks guys.
