Default nasty receptacle

I noticed some wierd things going on in my home, so I started checking into things. This is one thing that I found. Thank God that I found this, and have completely re-wired that entire room, along with two others, including the kitchen.

Wiring was old - maybe 50's ? era rubber insulated fabric covered 2-wire cable, no ground.

There's a moisture problem and something is causing that material to break down. Rodents or insects maybe?

yes, there was a leaky roof at one time, and blown-in recycled-paper-type insulation, and likely squirrels...

Notice how far the box was set back...
Notice the gaps around the box's edges...

Scary, who knows how long it was like this before I found it.
