Default Meters

I just got a Sperry DM-210A and a GB Solenoid voltage tester My question is kind of dumb. can i take a reading from a wall outlet that has power. Would that be safe. Or do I have to turn the breaker off.

Uhhhhhhhhh......WHAT?

How are you going to take a VOLTAGE reading if you turn the breaker off and have no VOLTAGE present at the receptacle?

No offense, but you were right, that was a dumb question.

Everybody has got to start somewhere. Stick around a while a read all you can. You'll get way ahead of your fellow coworkers that are around the same experience level as you right now. Ask all the "dumb" questions that you want to. Would you rather ask "dumb" questions to people you work with or to people you'll probably never see face to face in your life? Ask away.

Hey, I said no offense

Seriously, I was just busting your chops. Asking questions is the only way to learn.

actually its not so dumb. you cant take a VOLTAGE reading with the breaker off but you can take an OHM reading with it off. and just my opinion but take that solinoid tester back and get your money back, they are too dangerous. google them and you will find some pretty hairy pics of them blowing up. i dont think there is a manufacturing plant around anymore that will let them on the grounds.

Are you serious? I grew up in construction, so I have been around jobsites for the last 40 years and have yet to see anyone blow up a wiggy. I just started using one again (Fluke T + Pro) just to avoid constant ghost voltages of the regular digitals. Chances are it isnt the device but the tool operating it.

i agree most of the time its the operator but do you want an apprentice running around with one testing everything he comes across? they are allright if all you plan to do is residential. and ive never seen a big gear blow up but it happens.

I know what he is trying to point out to you. I work out of local 3 NYC, there are thousands of members. You hear first hand stories of gear that blew up in guys faces and every other thing you can imagine. I had a UEI digital amp clamp blow up in my hand reading 480 3ph.
BUT, I have never heard of any one blowing up a wiggy or volt con, or an associated piece of equipment with one. Not saying it's an Urban Legend but I don't think it is common at all. I also just picked up a new Fluke T plus pro when they were on special at Grainger, to avoid phantom voltage readings.
