Default Good Sub-contractors....advice

I have a great sub that I use on all of my bigger data jobs. He is a really great worker, and has been a long time friend outside of work. I recently had the opportunity to do a 30 drop job in an office outfit, and he worked his tail off to get it done on time. This job was bid entirely on time and a half, and I really didn't lift a finger the entire job. Let's just say that there is the potential for a good deal of money to be made by me (as long as I get paid) for this is a new customer of mine.

I was thinking in this holiday season, that I would give him a bonus, but my wife (who has no workings in my business other than to complain about the money situations, but what wife doesn't) doesn't think it is a good idea, or at least to the scale I was thinking.

Should I pay him what he is due for his hourly rate, business is business? Give him a bonus (about 17% of the profit)? Or cut the bonus down to a wife pleasing 8%?

Thanks

Are you going to give your supplier a bonus also? If you lost money would he take part of the loss?

If he's working hard and making you a healthy amount of money they show him he's worth it. Give him a bonus.

Let's face it, the reason we work in the first place: money. Show somebody the job they do goes unnoticed and much appreciated and they'll keep it up and try to do better the next time.

I just gave out $13,000 in bonus money to 13 employees at our Christmas party last night. They ranged between $300-$3000. But without their hard work, we would not have made the profits we made.

If he works with you. I have one contractor we sub back and forth if he is in trouble on a job (money issues) I'll cut him slack and vice a versa. In this relationship when I have a GOOD job I let him in on it and he does the same for me.

Take care of him and in the future he should do the same for you.

Wives tend to be greedy and generally in my opinion don't belong in a business like this.

Is that enough disclaimers?

WE know how hard this type of wok is and WE can recognize and appreciate it when someone steps up.

Give him the bonus that you would want him to give to you.

Contractors are only tradesmen without those who work for/with them.

This attitude never fails to irk me. Yes, reward where reward is due. I do give gift cards to the counter guys at the supply house if they have invested themselves in giving me good service. Everybody likes to be told they are appreciated from time to time. Sure those guys get a paycheck every week but if they do more for you than just earn their paycheck it shouldn't go unnoticed. One thing that really gripes me is employees who treat customers like they are a bother. Whether it is at the supply house, Walmart or McDonalds. I see it more and more and I have to wonder if we are raising a generation of apathetic jerks or if we, the public, are becoming so unappreciative that they just have given up. The girl who works in the station where I buy my gas and coffee every morning knows I appreciate how she takes pride in keeping the place spic and span and treats me like a neighbor because I tell he so and drop off a gift card at Christmas time. The sparkies I've subbed this past year when my back was against the wall were paid well at the time but they will still be seeing some gratitude from me over and above this week. They'll likely be available the next time I need them if they know they are appreciated. Treat people you deal with every day like you want to be treated whether they reciprocate or not. It's just the right thing to do
