I never know that and I never know where they got my number..
It might be a referral, they saw me on the road, or I was parked at 7-11 having coffee..
I treat everybody the same.. try and get a YES before I walk out the door..
So far I have never used e-mail.. or have a customer mention e-mail.. to give an estimate.. for me.. it just seems "cold" and I'm just another price in the mix..
I know.. this best describes me..

But thats OK.
The internal combustion engine has been around how long?
And it is still the main propulsion for how many 'modern' things?

Several years ago I initiated quoting from the van, typically in 5-15 minutes. The benefits are cutting travel and travel time expenses in half. Another benefit is that the project is often approved to start immediately. This is for residential service.

All day, everyday. I don't do much of anything else. Our company is 95%+ service. We quote as much as possible on the spot. The change of actually landing the job skyrockets!

How is the transit working out for you? I've been thinking about one for the last couple years.

Your absolutely right about that. We ran the numbers.
The numbers bare out that not closing on the first visit reduces conversion rates to 20%. Which means that you have to run 5 calls (estimates or whatever you call them) to close one sale if you don't close them on the first visit.
On the first visit with existing customers we close 73%. With first time potential customers we close 47% on the first visit.
Anyone that thinks that the "mail a bid" program works for them is kidding themselves. They are running around wasting enormous amounts of time not quoting on the first visit. When you don't quote on the first visit it all comes down to price for a customer.
When you build repore and trust with the customer, assume the sale right from the beginning and ask for the sale all on the first call you'll close more calls, at higher average sale, in about a third of the time.
The "mail a bid program" or the "call them on the phone program" is for amateurs who don't know how to sell themselves and the value in doing business with their company.
