Mine took 9½ months. Don't feel bad. Technically, I was a hack for 3 weeks.

You should look into what is involved in getting a License to install Security Systems and Fire Alarms.

There are many who have made a very good living just doing that.

Good luck getting your ship off the ground.

The business application was approved on June 3rd so I don't what the hell the delay is. I need the license number to be able to advertise, make business cards, etc. The sooner I get it the sooner I can come off the unemployment line and do my part to bringing this country back, maybe even do some hiring.

But it doesn't stop there. I still need to wait to get the official business seal. By the time it's all said and done it'll be close to a year for everything to be finalized (approval, testing, business).

I'm not worried about going out and "hacking" as you put it. That's not how I would describe it but I get your point. I have a job to do tomorrow and I'm doing it. Nothing major, but I have bills that are mounting and I have to do what I have to do.

I can do all of that with the EC license. I've never really done a complete low-voltage fire alarm or security alarm system. I learned about them in school that's about it.

Consider government-military work. In VA-NC-SC the military is building a lot. But the VA Hospitals also have quite a few renovation jobs going on.

On the bigger jobs, the General Contractors are looking for small business enterprises. You would probably qualify there. The key is finding a GC who is willing to break up the work. Bonding in this day and age may also be a problem, but they can work you under their umbrella if they choose to.

If I had to look at an obvious place to start, I would try the temporary services for their job trailers. You could also try and be the go-to guy for when they find a small hole in their scope and want a quick circuit installed for the forgotten recirculating pump.

None of this is automatic, but an awful lot of people are turned off by the headaches of working with the government, and are not yet hungry enough to take the plunge. You are way behind the curve on the people who have been doing it during the good years, but they are going to get stretched thin with all the construction.
