American Soldiers
Watching a show on History channel right now about the real "black hawk down", I like to watch a lot of shows like this.
But I'm never ceased to be amazed by how courageous some men are. I honestly can't believe how guys can deliberately go out in the face of danger and do what we all trust them to do.
I just had to say my hat goes off to these great men that serve our country

Yeah, I saw the History Channel version of Black Hawk Down and I liked it. When it first came out they were trying to promote how it was differen't than the movie version. But, the movie turns out to be pretty darn accurate to the History Channel version.

I agree Frank, It's tough to allow yourself to sit and be a vegetable. So it's nice to sit in a recliner and relax and still learn something.

TV Sucks
I also like Modern Marvels, but really the only show I make sure I watch is Battlestar Galactica.
These days you have about 100+ TV channels and most play reruns of bad shows from the 80's. The show COPS is on about 5 channels simultaneously and 10 channels are home shopping channels. 20+ channels are in foreign languages and HBO, Showtime and other "premium" channels are showing reruns of movies that tanked at the box office.
99% of TV is crap, but soon all that crap will be in high definition.

It's not just crap. It's crap we have to pay for. Not just the cable fee but the multiple adds that interupt every 10 minutes.
I settled down to watch a live game of Boston Redsocks. Can of beer in one hand and pack of crisps (chips) in the other. Feet up on the dog and yet within 30 minutes I was up and in the workshop. Do games provide space for adds. Or do adds provide space for games. Beats me!!!!!!!

As what ancient spoke "superlative courage - civil courage".
I think, in USA made best of the world movie about war with participation of the military technology. Even about catastrophe on Soviet atomic submarine your film much better then filmed in Russia, as minimum, more emotional.
Good movie are released seldom and amount of channel does not affect on this. So our TV is crap not less than your TV.
Apropos, through pair of the months promises the premiere of "Shrek 3". As i rememer on first parts, it is more than excellent animation and music.

Joe, from a Soldier of many years ago,its not always that you're courageous. It's sometimes that your training just kicks in,sometimes you automatically aid your friends,as they would you.
Sometimes, you're just plain scared, and have to do something, anything you can.
I'll have to say tho, that the Men and women of today's Military are Courageous beyond belief.

We were at Walgreens at about midnight a couple months ago, and I caught one of the workers conversation to the security gaurd.
This employee used to be a Ranger and was telling a story of clearing caves in Afghanistan. I stood there for 20 minutes while he told of fighting hand to hand and being shot in the leg twice at point blank range.
Hearing it all got my emotions stirring and I had to shake the guys hand when he was done.
Truly Amazing!

Thinking courage. Then think Gettysburgh!! How many men today..... and I don't care how many Purple Hearts they have. would line up like Lee's men and reline again and again and again.
Or the French brigades that marched at Waterloo. Or nearer our time, the troops going over the top in WW1 or the Airmen of the 8th Army Airforce and RAF in WW2 of whome tens of thousands were shot from the sky's.
When we consider modern warfare. We are playactors by comparson to our forefathers.

Frank:
Warfare has changed with technology, but it's no less traumatic now than it was in previous battles. My Regiment has had numerous KIA's, wounded, retired at 18 years old, and others who are suffering from PTSD. Was is still a full contact sport, just the methodology has changed.
I love talking with older veterans, as I feel they are our true National Treasures. There are a lot of them in this town, mostly retired/former Marines of years past, who are a incredible source of information and history.
In 1995, I had the chance to go to Iwo Jima for the 50th Anniversary to help provide logistic support etc. for the occasion. On my off time, I got to meet and mingle with warriors on both sides, and talk to them. It was truly humbling to be with them.
Sadly, our pool of WWII and Korean veterans is slowly draining, they are gettting old, as are our Viet Nam vets.
We had a guest speaker a few months back, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. His name is Colonel "Irish" Egan USMC who was out promoting his new book. Great speaker, great stories, and epitomizes the word "Marine".

Geez, talk about off topic......
How do you follow-up the previous two posts with a question about "TV tax"
There is a function on this site called a 'private message'

You are right of course. War is a full contact sport. I am sure non of us doubt the bravery and sacrifice of our military. BUT. I can't get it out of my head that it took something special to march against a line of muskets or machine guns or AKAK knowing that you could not.....duck. Standing straight and continuing on course in such circumstances surely needed courage of a type available only to its time. For my part. Could I have done it.??????????
We have this evening 15 UK sailors hostage in IRAN.Do I doubt their courage and sacrifice. NO. We also lost 4 soldiers last week. So this thread is timely.

Sorry Joe
But since this query is now public domain!
A Licence fee is paid to Fund the BBC each year by every household. $200 Depending on your point of view it is a Tax or a means of having an independent broadcaster free of Big Bussiness or Government influence. For my part I like the idea of an independent advert free broadcaster. The BBC opperates 2 Channels Add Free. Each with a different 'charter mandate' 6 channels with adds. Also 12 national radio stations catering for different tastes and appx 30 local stations. Sounds a lot but really nothing when viewed against the 300 or so Private Radio Stations and 400 TV stations.
Provides an oasis of sanity for those that need 'escape'

I've liked the BBC's programs and have a few on my computer that I'm still waiting to watch, but I didn't know the BBC was a sort of independant broadcasting like PBS(public broadcasting) is here on TV, or NPR (national public radio) on the radio.
That being said i still have no idea what it has to do with the sensitive subject of American (or even British) Soldiers

Joe Sorry I upset you delicate balance, I was trying to save band width of a private IM.
I come from a family with a military back ground, my father served in 3 wars, 36 years in the Army. I do not have to justify anything to you regarding military exposure or sensitivity.
Once again I apologize for bothering you.

So do they still have PBS telethons where you guys are? just wanted to know but didn't want to hog precious band width.........
What a joke, I have an 8meg line. A web page every second would not even use half my bandwidth. Nor would the server care about a single PM?????
Pehaps if had someone die in a war you might a bit of sesitivity.....no I suspect not. "war veterans 'in my family' give me room to talk" about stuff that is completely off topic. there's also a button called 'start a new thread'
I apologize if my insesitivity imposed on your BBC tax discussion,.........jackass
