East coast nor'easter
How is everyone coming through the storm? I'm powerless! Spending the night at moms, and cursing this slow computer , but better then being in the dark and cold. I'm just glad it waited until the rain was over, or my basement appartment would have 6" of water in it! (I figure there are 2 sump pumps for a reason, and they were working hard yesterday)

Sure was windy. I was dodging garbage cans, porch furniture, and yard decorations when I was driving early this morning. Not much power out in my area.

Have you seen the sump pumps that don't require electricity? They's used as a backup pump and only require water pressure from your home(they remove 5 times more water than they add)

They're pretty neat, aren't they?
'Spensive little buggers, too. Probably the only way to make your sump pump bullet-proof. I've had people have me put in some of those battery sump backups. They seem like garbage to me, but whatever they want.

I'm doing fine....I swear that I cursed myself. Last winter we had a freak windstorm where after the windstorm, the temp. plummeted to the single digits, so I finally broke down and bought a generator........guess what? I used the generator for a few hours and havent lost power since!!!!!!

Maybe that's why you havn't lost power?
You intimidated the power Gods!
It seems like when a really bad storm comes through, all the "weak links" in the power system declare themselves, and get replaced. That normally puts the system in fine shape for a good while, and better able to withstand a few more really bad storms in the coming years.
In my area, it was lack of good tree-trimming operations that really resulted in lots of outages over the years. They're really stepped that up the last several years. It's paying off, with less outages.

Frank.
Usually what we have goes to your Canadian cousins first. Nothing like sloppy thirds.
This was the 7th time this winter that I had to run my home generator. Well worth the money because money is no object when it comes to keeping the little woman happy.

Still getting snow. High wind gusts, wet sticky snow...so far no power outages, but I'm betting that changes before the day is out. Yesterday was all snow/rain so now we have a foot of snow over 8 inches of slush and mud. Yay! Dirt roads almost impossible to plow and travel is iffy, so I've taken the day off.

John. Did you say keeping the little woman happy. Is it really possible? Tell the world your secret. It surely can't be just as simple as switching on the generator? Do tell.
Mountain Elect. I would take the season off. Looks like you and cabin fever will get along nicely.

Marc:
I have accounts at various automotive suppliers as we service generators.
I have had chances to install a generator at my house, several times. I ended up with several generators over the years when customers upgraded. But in the 16 years I have been here I have only lost power a few times and then only for an hour or two. Installing a generator would be just one more thing to take care of in my limited off hours, with little payback.

"Money" and I said it twice.
My son got stuck 8 ft from the garage. He almost made it without chains or shoveling.
My POCO is an old REA company where it was cheaper to hire guys to clear a right-away that running copper lines along roads. This means that power lines were run the shortest distance from point A to point B, through swamps, over mountain tops, etc. This is why I loose power all the time. Trees grow faster than the crews can clear them.

He was intending to drive in that, sorry but that volkswagon aint going nowhere, Perhaps his first bout with snow?(seeing as he just used his wipers instead of making an effort)

Acutully he is a very seasoned winter driver. He drove about 20 miles from work and got within 8 ft of the garage. He should of stayed in town, but he got it in his head that he wanted to get home. I wasn't sure If he was going to try and make it home and was waiting for the snow to let up before I fired up the skidder to plow the driveway. Oh well.

To add injury to insult, I sideswiped the tire of the skidder that was plowing my driveway yesterday and dented the passengerside door of my pickup. The perfect ending to a perfect day.
