I asked a Marshall Elevator dude about their "Since 1886" logo.He said elevators were powered by water pressure,back then.

I installed a couple that were vaccuum powered up and controlled gravity descent down. Controlled leakage let the down. Really similar to the tubes at the bank drive thru. Cool, but particular installations. When we went to the training class, me and the other guy from the company both decided the first handful of installations would be a disaster. They were. Salesmen and GC's were not ready for this new idea.

We still have DC powered elevators in NYC. I used to work in a pre-war building and took lunch in the elevator machine room. The interlocking of the various relays and the purr of the motor was like a symphony to me!
