A year ago he was offered an entry level position at some company with a starting salary of almost 40 grand and the shmuck turned it down.... He was already turned down for the FBI so it will be interesting to see what happens ...
I agree with Brian... The schools have kids brainwashed into thinking that college is the only way to do it...
I think the next bubble to burst is going to be the school loans...

Pretty much agree. People say how sad it is that college graduates can't get jobs with their diploma, when they hold a historic poetry degree or some other low demand degree.
Go ahead and hold out for "the job you deserve." I won't feel sorry for you when you live off of ramen noodles.
My brother just graduated with a "organized communication" degree and works at Wal Mart. He says one day he'll be making 6 figures. I don't completely doubt that one day that'll be true, but I just tell him not to count his eggs.

If you really want to mess with his head, tell him it will take 365 days to make 6 figures ~ or is he just going to work for that one day.

I went here for two years
and studied math. I did well in my math and music classes but didn't like having to take a bunch of BS classes like history and art and stuff I had no interest in. But they wanted "well-rounded graduates" so they, like most other universities, have a required "core curriculum."
So I have to go there and spend half my time taking classes that have nothing to do with my major, paying $35,000 a year in tuition. What a crock.

I think colleges should eliminate the general education requirements, or at least pare them down quite a bit. That way, they'd send graduates into the workforce sooner and with less debt. But then again, the educational loan industry is a big racket.

One reason we are number 25, the belief propagated by schools that college is the only way.

Most of us who are proud of our craft, as you are, still want our kids to not have to dig ditches...sweat the blood of a person who has the bad days... weeks...months that work is not available even if we are ready for it. We still want our children to go to college in order for them to be able to make "the" choice. Some parents may raise their children to believe that college is the only way and the "kids" ...and they are "kids" at that age, can tease one who cannot afford to attend.

I can understand that and respect it. But my concern is that we're making schooling so expensive, that by virtue of taking on the debt-burden someone has unintentionally limited their choices.
Yes, you can make a fine career as a tradesman, but even if a person is actually suited for that, who in their right mind is gonna want to be a helper for $15 an hour when they've got a six-figure note they're trying to pay off?
In that way it becomes an option of last resort, not a reasonable choice.

On the other hand, college is a great place to find easy sluts.

One of my ex girlfriends has her own casting company in NYC... She went to regular ole community college, did a internship with NBC and with lots of hard work eventually opened up her own company... I was really happy to see that..
Hard work and a little street smarts can also go along way....

I think the days of going to school for an arbitrary degree are long gone.. If your gonna shell out that kind of money you better have a real idea of what you want to do...

I needed about 15 credits to graduate from a small business college in the city before i dropped out and went to cooking school.... When i told my parents, my dads head turned red and spun around a few times, I told him it just wasnt for me...
to this day, i sometimes lay in the shower and cry about it.... No just kidding at this point even if i finished it, it would have no bearing on my life now..
My neice went to lehigh in PA and spent almost 150 grand. Now she does something with a company called ask Gary (doctor referal system) in South Florida. So she also spent about 100 grand more than she needed to.....

Life is rough but the "cart before the horse" phrase comes into play. No one should want to be a helper "after" they are in extreme debt. I am not trying to be mean but that is just the way it is.
