Default Insane Insurance Increase

Last December I had an minor accident in a private parking lot. I hit a parked car when backing out of a parking space. (tinted windows are dangerous at night)
My truck only suffered a broken tail light. I payed for the repair out of pocket. About $100.
The other driver had $1500 in damages. Side door damage and door handle.
I got my renewal yesterday and it is almost a 100% increase. Almost double what I was paying previously.
All this for a minor accident with no citation, ticket, injury or any police involvement. Had I known what I know now, I would have asked the other party to allow me to pay for her damages as I did mine. Out of pocket.

Does a 90% premium/rate increase sound right and why so high. It seems 20 plus years of perfect driving history means nothing to these people.

I would likely shop around.

Just a guess that your rates had been low due to the long time you had been with them and they were very happy to find a reason to nail you with higher rates.

Just curios what you pay for insurance and what coverage.

All those years of no problems washed away by a small incident! Rat bastards! I would call around for rates of different companies, explaining the situation. You are a good driver. They do this kind of crap because they CAN!

Maybe one of the shareholders just bought a new yacht!

So far Geiko is the most expensive in my search for a new policy. GMAC right now has the best price. But I have not called them yet. Seems once you call and speak to a real person, the price goes up from the internet quote.

Bob,
I have 100,000/300,000 Bodily Injury Limit.
Pretty much standard at this limit with towing and rental car allowance.

I have my truck. 2009 Dodge Ram and wife's car, 2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS/Limited.

Premium was $435.00 bi-annual. Now they want $710.00. "Esurance"

Ps............I shop the policy each renewal period. So I have been with Esurance for 1.5 years.

The insurance companies rely on brain dead people who get 100% rate increase and just pay the bill..

Good luck finding a better rate.. but they all suck.. even worse than GC's..

You may have had a pretty nice no-claim discount, I think some are upwards of 40%. That's a pretty hefty increase to lose in addition to an increase for now having a claim, unfortunately it's sort of like being punished twice.

I think you are right. I believe I was getting an exceptional rate before the accident, and now I am just seeing what it really should/could cost?
Anyway, I did find a better price with an old company I dropped a few years ago. Makes the increase (theft) a bit easier to accept.
Thanks everyone.

What really bugs me is insurance is for things like this. But you better never ever have a claim. What happens to people that are in serious accidents where people may have died or been seriously injured? I cannot imagine how much they could increase a premium in a serious case.

I think that's when you have to use it. It's like having catastrophic medical insurance, with a high deductable.

Your rates seems really cheap compared to mine here in Ca. I pay $1491. for my 2005 van, and my 2012 Mazda 3 !! No accidents

I pay about $1,400 a year give or take a few bucks, low deductibles, around 4 million in liability. Its a pretty good policy.

I've been in two accidents in the last 6 years. A girl sideswiped me causing 7K in damage to my 05 Silverado. Then in 2010, my 2010 Silverado got smashed pretty bad when a guy made an illegal turn right into my path. I never had a chance to even hit the brakes. It was repaired, I wound up fighting the insurance company for well over a year and I'd say that case has cost them well in excess of $100K...and counting. I'm going to beat them into the ground just a little further.

My rates haven't budged. Actually I'm driving a 2012 F150 now and my rates only changed about $70 more for the year.

Location has everything to do with your rates. It is not the rate itself. It is the increase that really bugs me.
Not fair at all IMO.

Cheap where? I am certain I can find lower rates somewhere. It is not the rate. It is the increase that matters the most to me.

Is this for 6 months or a year? Is the van covered as a company/commercial vehicle? I had three vehicles (private) when I lived in Cali. When I moved to Louisiana I notified the insurance company, renewal time. When I got the bill I flipped out and called them asked if they were confused. The cost for a 6 month policy was 3 times what the previous annual policy had been.

One Year. Van is commercial vehicle. Why would Louisiana be more than Calif. ? Maybe vehicle thieft is higher ?

This is a sue your self state. My property taxes in Cali were $2800.00 a year. My home owners insurance here is 2999.00 a year, went down $300.00 from the year before. Home owners insurance in Cali for a bigger house, pool/spa and big dogs (scary) was $580.00.

But you got a bigger house for 1/3 the cost ? Why did you move there ?

Well it's cheap in NJ. That insane increase would surely piss me off however, especially considering your record and the minor damage.

Wife is from here and I retired. The thought process was that it would be cheaper to live here. So far the only thing cheaper is property and property taxes, state income tax is less also. But, as most retirement articles tell you any cost savings you gleen will be over shadowed by other costs. Sales tax where I live is the highest allowed by state law and now the school board is trying for a wavier from the state to raise it higher than allowed.
