The iPhone is tougher than you know. I used to think the same thing.
A girl at the ATT store near me took an iPhone with an Otter Box cover and literally threw it 10-15 feet across the store. Sure, it was carpet, but on a slab. Not a scratch, chip or break. She said they do that at least 2-3 times a day, and have been for 2 months since they got those cases.

Same here. I'm old-fashioned, and have a phone. Just a phone. It rings, I pick it up. I push the buttons and call someone. No text, camera, 'killer' apps, GPS, nothing but a plain old phone. Well, yeah, it has Direct Connect, which is nice to beep others with. But otherwise, it's a phone, just a phone, and nothing but a phone
A Motorola i315. Been dropped off roofs, run over by skytracks, immersed in water countless times. And it still works. I'm still making and receiving calls when everyone else is driving off to the cell phone store to buy another cheap phone they subconsciencely know they'll need to replace within 3 months.

I wasn't just "Guessing" when I said that! My sixteen year old HAD TO HAVE an Iphone. Three months later the screen has a crack all the way accross. Months later, it has two. These things will never make it ona job site.

Me too! Mines water proof and shock proof. And I put it to the test. Not purposefully, but things happen. Phone slips out of your pocket from 20 feet, an iphone isn't gonna fair very well.

I've been using an iPhone on a construction site for 4 years. I had the original, the 3G, and now have the 3GS. I never broke any of them, I sold them in good condition when the newer models were released.
If you break an iPhone, it's because you are not being careful.
BTW, I have never used a case, my iPhones are always naked. If you think you might break yours then you simply put it in the Otterbox case.

I 'test' mine all the time when I show people how durable this thing is. I throw it on the floor, dip it in a bucket of water, toss it into snowbanks, kick it across the room.......
Everyone gasps when they see me do that. Then I pick it up and show it to them. They mumble something about how they wish their fancy-schmancy high-dollar Blackberry or iPhone could be like that.
All you other guys can keep making monthly trips to the phone store spending your money on those 'girly' phones. Me, I'm gonna just wipe the mud off mine and go back to work.

That's a challenge.
I am willing to bet you than an iPhone in an Otterbox is more durable (waterproof, shockproof, etc.) than your phone.
And then we'll see if you could pull up the 2008 NEC on your phone, or one of the hundreds of apps dedicated to electrical work (calculations, etc). And then we'll see if you could charge credit cards from your customers on your phone

I got a better challenge. Take it out of this 'Otterbox' and try it.
I can make ANY phone pass your challenge if given the opportunity to put something else around it. Crikey, all I need is a ZipLock bag and some bubble wrap.

That's what laptop computers are for. I don't need to 'call up the 2008 NEC' while I'm working. I know what to do, and how to do it. I'm not saying I have the NEC memorized, but for the most part, I don't need the NEC (paper or electronic or on a phone) during my work-a-day world. Using a $1000 phone just so I can look up a Code reference would be a waste of my money. If I'm going to have a Code-related issue, I know well in advance about it and look it up BEFORE I go to work that day instead of wasting time pushing buttons on some techno-gizmo to find the answer.
As for CCs, I've only had two people in the past 16 years even ask about them. So why spend the money on being able to take them if it's a form of payment that isn't even offered?
The ball is in your court.

I'm pretty hard on phones, but I've had my iPhone for a year and a half with no problems. I don't have it in a case. The only issue I have with it is when I'm carrying it in my pocket in the summer, and it gets damp from sweat, I have to dry the screen off good before the touch feature will work.

The iPhone in the Otterbox is still smaller than your phone.
The newest iPhone is $200.

At least you admit that mine is bigger than yours.

And that's $200 I can easily spend somewhere else.

If you were able to realize more than 200 dollars worth of productivity gains, wouldn't it seem worth it?

I would say it was free when I signed up for service, but like they say, "There's no such thing as a free lunch."

Of course. But an iPhone is not something I can use to save $200. There's lots of things that cost $200 but won't increase my productivity one cent.

Increased productivity is some of the most real savings you can get.

With all the people across the country using credit cards at an all time high, you really don't think advertising that you accept credit cards might help? You say in 16 years you only had 2 people ask if you accept credit cards, but maybe people just weren't used to services like this accepting them. Nowadays, more and more services accept them and I think you might be able to get more business. One job from someone using a CC because they are low on cash would most likely pay the $200 for the iPhone and the $50 for the app to accept CC's.
There are SOOO many other benefits from using an iPhone. Just one other thing that you might like is the ability to answer a customer's e-mail on the spot.
Nevermind the fact that you can surf this forum from the truck during lunch break
