Ive heard of these places, Do you really have to swab every part before it makes it into the clean room?

yes, everything from tools, pipe , nuts and bolts, everything has to be wiped down with a solution before entering the clean room area.

Wow, I heard if someone spits on the floor they have to take that part of the floor out to. Sounds like an awesome job to be on I can only handle the big jobs for a month or two.

Wow. Thanks for sharing.
Does the $6billion include all the costs of the chip making equipment, or just building and MEP costs?

Jealous over here in WA state! We need a project or two like that to start up in our area. Things in Local 76 have been slow. Just got laid off yesterday and it looks like it'll be 10 to 12 months before I can take a call.

Up here if we add on to an existing building it is called an addition, not an extension.
That is AMAZING though. That is as serious as it gets! I had no idea that was going on.

Pretty impressive building. I spent 9 years working in a class 1 clean room for Lucent Technologies and Bell Laboratories. It was a .25 micron facilities. I was an analyst and got to see and play with some neat electronics and dangerous chemicals. I have tons of pictures, I'll post them if anyone is interested.

Ya post some of it. :-)
My father worked at Bell Labs in their Murry Hill facility back in the 60's & 70's.
He was a patient attorney for them. He would bring home some wild stuff back in them days.
Who would ever believe a TV the size of a credit card, or a tiny phone with no cord that flips open. Only Star Trek has that kind of stuff.

Clean Room photos
As requested:
M2i PVD (Pressure Vapor Deposition) I worked in thin films and metals. This is where the metal layers are deposited of the wafers. The thickness is measured in Angstroms.
M2i backend
M2i computer
Endura PVD
Endura backend
Endura loading bays
Endura bay, typical of a bay where the operators worked
Me
The metal is deposited via a plasma field. The chambers have a target inside each chamber and it is a sacrificial cathode and the metal atoms fall on the wafer in a straight line (free mean path) due to the vacuum: 5x10-8 torr. Space is at a -14 scale. We had one process that actually ran at that vacuum it was called implant. That is where the doping impurities are embedded into the wafer to create the semi-conductor property.
I worked on the equipment and performed experiments for the engineers and collected and organized the data for them. I sometimes miss that worked because you had to really use your brain and we were well compensated.

More clean room photos
RTA (Rapid Thermal Anneal)
RTA Computer
RTA/Brush Scrubber and Chemical bay
I have some actual wafers here at the house. I'll get some photos of them and share them. I learned a lot about inorganic chemistry and physics working at this place.

THIS is what we need!
Taking back manufacturing one step at a time. We gave it away step by step, that's how we CAN take it back!
