Default Reading posts when not signed in

I have just noticed that when I read posts when I am not signed in certain keywords in the threads are double underlined and the words are green instead of black. If I move my cursor to the words a balloon ad pops up. This does not appear when I am sign in.

This seems to be only happening on this site. Anyone else experiencing this phenomena? Any ideas? Virus seems odd to be from just electricians talk so....

I did, and I see the little gremlins.

If ET has some sort of 'deal with the devil', I'd say an excorcism is in order. We want newcomers here to feel welcome, not think we're just an ad-spamming site.

If someone finds ET, they may think twice about signing up if all they see are ads in the posts.

Yesterday when I sent you a pm I didn't realize why they disappeared so quickly. Today I noticed they were there only when you sign out.

I'm always signed in, so that's why I never saw them. I didn't doubt you, I just never saw them until you started this thread. I assumed it was just you and that's why I suggested you to do a virus scan and check your pop-up blocker settings.

Pete? Nathan? Marc? Is the site infected?

I've had this also. It used to be that whenever I came to this site, I would be automatically recognized and logged in. That has changed sometime in the last week. I wondered about those words in green and doubled underlined too. I clicked on a few of them and no matter what the word, I always went to a sears site. Strange. Good to know I'm not crazy though.

Beats me, but Nathan owns the place. He doesn't really clear stuff like that with the moderators, nor does he have to. If he can get a couple extra bucks a month getting an unregistered user to click on a word, that doesn't matter to me. Gonna log out real quick and check it out...

I just checked it out. You gotta admit, it is a cool popup thing. Video and all, and rather quick. Only pops up if you specifically mouse over a highlighted word. I'd call it tasteful, and the links I moused over were all relevant to the highlighted word.

I agree it isn't bad but just wanted to make sure it wasn't a virus of sorts. Interesting that it isn't visible when signed on.

Perpetually signed in here, so that does not happen.

A good incentive to sign in while on the site, to avoid such nonsense.

Problem is, are we going to drive good prospects away who would become valuable members if they're barraged with advertising like that? It's bad enough I see 5 or 6 ads all over the page... now they're sticking them in members posts? And in MY posts!

So someone is going to think I am not an electrician, but a front for advertising for something like Service Magic or Spectrum Health or who-knows-what. And if they see that in everyone's posts, they're going to think we're nothing but a bunch of advertisers posing as professionals in our field.

That's my point. Sticking advertising right in front of someone and forcing them to look at it is going too far.

FWIW, I checked ContractorTalk, and they have the same thing there.

From this, am I to assume it's perfectly acceptable to insert advertising of my own choosing in the same manner?
