oh i never belittle people in the open, i always pulled them to the side, but i also tell them exactly what i think without sugar coating it, i do not want to fire anyone, and they know that, but they also know what i expect from and what it takes to stay on a job with me

Sorry, but you sound like something of a primadonna. It's not necessary to take long warm showers til the wee hours of the mornin' with your crew, but they have to know that they're appreciated when they're bustin' ass to get the job put in.
I've worked for folks like you described yourself to be. I didn't stick around long.

I worked with a few butt heads and I explained to them we are all adults here, I've treated you like an adult and you acted like a child with a temper tantrum in response, can we both act like adults. Worked in both cases for me, they still treated everyone else like crap.

I like you're bosses style, and he got your "Attention" didn't he.
Here is my point you're boss just gave you something better than a raise, He just gave a chance to straiten out your act.

As a foreman you need your crew to respect you ,and for that to happen you have to earn it from each of the men ,That means you have to treat each one of them with respect and make the job fun to come to and work hard having fun doing it that will get them to come in every day looking forward to the job.
No one wants to get their ass chewed out all day everyday that only make guys think about slashing your tires while you are sleeping at night.
In my opinion you're not ready to be a lead man on any job and need to read up on leadership.

Would you want to work for you?
Would you like to be treated the way you treat people?
Is that how you would like your kids to be treated by their boss if they were on the job?

The guy you worked for could also lose good guys because of you getting mad at them all the time.

I show my guys respect. I can get along with almost everone, whether I like them or not. Most guys just want to do a good job. If you treat them right and give them the tools, material, and information they'll work hard for you. I feel lucky to have a great crew that gets along, take a little ownership, and wants to learn. They always go the extra mile and I like to think I motivate them to do it.

I think your boss/owner hit the d*ck on the head. Just have to wonder if some of the other good workers haven't sat down with the owner over a beer and stated some of their issues. Which may have included them quiting or just filing harassment charges and or are you working them through legal required breaks without pay. Are you one of those guys that screams so much your hoarse all the time, make threats and then doesn't through. Do you lead by example? Some times you just have to step back and look inside your self.

I gotta print this and give it to one of our "Bosses".
He can use this, but I don't think he would understand it.
Thanks

Something I overlooked in all this; is what being a hard ass does to the health of the poster, from what I have read his personality type (TYPE A) is stressed and this leads to all kinds of health issues.
Chill out, you do not need to be their friend but you would do better as their leader and mentor.

Mistakes happen, the best of us make them. I'm sure Peter D even makes some. No one want to work for someone that using your words ( come unglued ). It makes it stressful for your people and makes the company look bad with the other trades. From what it sounds like your guys gave the owner a option you or them. Of it was one or two guys that's fine but here it sounds like your whole crew hates you. Life is stressful already no one wants added stress because they might mess something up and have an you treat them like one of Harry's dogs. Just kidding Harry.

I will agree with the others in the thread. Your attitude stinks.
Now it's time for you to practice what you preach. Take responsibility for your actions.
Hopefully one day you'll realize that if you treat people with respect, they will be more inclined to accept your criticism and directions.
You catch more flys with honey than vinegar.

The honey and vinegar quote doesn't work here. Because sh-- seem to attract them too and that's how he treats his crew
