Default TV problem

Got an early model sony 42" flat screen.
There are areas on the screen that have fuzzy black spots here and there; I have replaced the lamp twice, the TV lets you know when it is dead. I'm thinking it is the lens refractor mirror dust that might be causing this...anyone?

/Did the problem go away the first time you replaced the lamp? And...what lamp are you talking about?

With LCD's there is a lamp that acts as the projection monitor (or something...) and it gets super hot; it wears out and you have to change it out every 3 years or so.

I thought those lasted for life or 60,000 hours...or whichever came first.

I think the old Sony of BuzzKill's is an LCD projector. The screen is flat, but it is not a wall mountable thin set. They have three LCD "slides" that are projected through a lens and blown up large. I have had two. My old one my bother in law had, and he was disappointed after changing the lamp. That one was one of the first and had a lamp driver problem. (that Sony fixed under warranty) He gave up and we sent it on down the line. My slightly newer model is doing fine. I'm pushing five years on the lamp. But their main drawback is the "crush blacks" and have very bad gray detail. But at the time, the price was right.

I suggest you take this question here:

http://www.avsforum.com/

click on forums, them scroll down to rear projection. It covers lcd & dlp If you check your model number, I bet there is an "owners thread" listed by model number. Those sets all have the same number except for the size. My current one is: KDF-E42A10
So their threads are like KDF-EXXA10 with XX representing the size. Sometimes one of the other letters are different depending on where you bought it. A slight difference in model number so Circuit City and Best Buy (for instance) would not have to price match.

(there is a separate area for the old crt based rear projectors)

Take the back off look in the lens. If you see "water spots" you have a breakdown in the CRT coolant. You would have to remove the assembly, cut open the seals, drain and replace the coolant, reseal it then align the focus rings. It will take a good part of the day.

My neighbor has one of these.
They called a TV guy out. He did not change the lamp. He cleaned something inside. Maybe the reflector or something. The difference was incredible.

Do keep in mind that DrSparky's product is for a CRT (cathode ray tube) projector and you have an LCD projector.

Some guys at the EMS station one time told a new female EMT that isn's so bright that the halogen fluid in the brake lights was low. So what does she do she goes to the store and asks for it. When they tell her they don't have any she wrote up an incident report to let the officers know that it was low.

I know this is not quite related to this thread but it is about TV's.

A few years ago the directory somewhere has me down as a TV repair person as well as electrician. Well I know doodly squat about TV's but I get tons of calls for these new TV's.

I was thinking of some of you young guys may think about going into the TV repair business. Nobody really is doing it around here and nobody wants to take there big screen down and bring it to Best Buy or some place like that.

Just a thought. These TV's seem to need alot of attention not like the old ones. I have 2 -- 19" Mitsubishi TV's that I have had for over 25 years. We still use one of them and we have never had a problem with them.

I get calls all the time and the new flat screens etc.

Because companies realized that when they make products that last they go out of business. That and everything is made in China, Taiwan, Mexico, Japan, etc.

I've had at least a dozen calls in the last 6 months asking if I fix TV's. Probably the same deal, somewhere, somehow I got added to a list. I almost considered it, but nah, there's enough to know with this trade.
