I always worked nonunion, but now run a union shop. Kind of backwards as I know a lot of contractors that came up union and run nonunion shops. Good points and bad from both sides in my opinion.

Because the unions are geared to the worker, not the owner.

I started out non union then joined the union and was union for our first year but trying to compete against all the non union shops became impossible financially so we went non union. I enjoy being a merit shop and treat my guys well.

Around here,
Nobody gives anybody any grief about being union or not.
We all compete for the same work and some we get and some we don't.
We do not look for plan and spec work very much.
Too many wanna be shops here do not know their costs and go broke screwing up the market and going broke.

It is going well. So far everyone is getting along OK. The call for man power has helped us a lot, and I am not afraid to take on to much work now. Still have a few guys who have not joined yet. I am sure this will turn into a problem.

NO, havn't had any problems like that. All the men we have hired seem to respect me as I do them. They are glad to have another contractor on board, means more work for the hall. About 50% of the local has worked non union anyways. Their own organizer came up non union.

They get a taste of that green and don't want to part with any of it. The money is a big part of it for me also, but Im not greedy, I cant make the money without good help and I think they deserve the pay and benefits they get.

It had better be.
There are already way too many threads with this union/non-union argument. At this point this thread is pointless and redundant.
The second it gets out of hand I (or someone else) am pulling the plug.
