Exclamation IRC: Internet Relay Chat - Helpfull

Im currently a student at College studying level 3 in electro-technical services, EAL Diploma - This is pretty much equivalent to the C&G 2330 Level 3 Course.

On to my point...I was thinking, forums are great...but even better then forums or aswell as forums is IRC, An Internet Relay Chat, basically an IRC Server which people can connect to and chat with other users a bit like using MSN messenger but like a huge confrence or meeting, just like a chat room. there are thousands of websites and forum owners who use IRC, its a great way for making conversations in real time, asking for help, pretty much anything. You can use a Client to connect to a IRC server such as mIRC (www.mirc.com) or ChatZilla (a mozilla firefox addon) Which is FREE to use, this is ONE of many free chat clients(think of msn messenger like a IRC client except it connects to a big room where everyone doesnt have to add eachothers email adress) ...I know loads of people who use it instead of forums and with, programmers, communities for games, fans for games, science, computer support, general chit-chat and the list goes on and on.

I've also come to see the fact that many people have tried to start their own website with forums for IEEE related things, students at college, university, qualified electricians and engineers who deal with all sorts of electrcial equipment and designing.

Why doesnt electricantalk.com host an IRC server which people can connect to? This can help SO many people form bonds and a decent ammount of communication, new friends can be made. there could be several "rooms" in this IRC Server which people can join to talk to others, for example A chatroom just for 3phase, homework help, electrical design systems.

To connect to something like this, a user would download a program like i mentioned above and tell it to connect to a server by typing in the connect box: irc.exampleadress.net

There are pleanty of other irc servers out there used by THOUSANDS of people so if your not familiar with it, join a random websites IRC server to see what im on about exactly for yourself.

This is just a suggestion to increase users on this site to communicate and have a general place to hang out.

Any views on this anyone?

Note:

For now....if anyone wants to experience IRC or already know how to use irc, I am friends with a guy who owns a site and an irc server, who will be adding a room named #ieee for me.

to connect to this room download a client such as Mirc or google for a few others. The IRC Server address is irc2.persistentworlds.net Port:6667. Once Connected type /join #lobby
This will be used to start off those who would like to have general chat or help or discussions on electrical related things, to chill out and so on. If electrciantalk.com would like to think about adding this feature then all the better, but for now anyone can freely join the one i just mentioned. Hopefully this sort of thing will spread the word and new users should join it. I will be posting to other electrcial forum sites in the aim for building up a general ammount of users on the irc server who would like to have general chat, discussions about anything, but knowing that if help is needed or what so ever users can contribute to helping others.

I read that twice, and I still have no idea what you're talking about. Can you give me the Cliff's notes version of what IRC chat is, with bullet points?

Yeah sorry, i think ill edit my original post is, its actually much more simple then what ive made it out to look like...

IRC: Internet Relay Chat

- Basically its like using MSN Messenger, but in a large group
- you connect this program which is called a IRC Client to an address
- you open the program up click on connect to: and type the server adress in "irc2.persistentworlds.net"
- Once the program has connected, you can join a chatroom within that server. There usually is a list which comes up with several rooms. you click on the room you want to chat in and start typing away with whoever else in that room

this has a little explanatin about what IRC is:

Nathan there are three basic reasons for that.
1) web based chat suks roks. it's just plain awful.
2) the folks who post here (with wives and lives) aren't inclined to wade into yet another time consuming venue; especially when most of the participants are the same.
3) the loose and friendly management here allows off topic posting.

I could be wrong, but I've been hearing for years of the vulnerabilities that irc relay chat software allows on your computer. I would never use it, nor would I allow it on my server.

I belong to another forum that has a chatroom, and go there once in a while, but like someone said above, the mods here allow off topic posts here so a chatroom isnt all that necessary.

You're wrong! I am a senior network administrator (computers ) and was looking to find out who had an electricians IRC room since I had a question but let me correct this "is insecure" state of mind you have.

IRC or Internet Relay Chat, first off, it isn't a program, it's a protocol and an open protocol meaning anyone can write software that understands it just as anyone can write software that understands http and html (web browser like IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Lynx etc). Now the ircd (IRC Daemon) which is the software that hosts an IRC room can be insecure but so can a browser for example anyone using IE6 or older, anyone using firefox 1 or older etc etc is more likely to be hacked then anyone using IE8 for FF 3 and at the same time if you use some browser that is made by someone who doesn't understand security then the browser is more likely to be hacked then one made by a professionsal development team like the people at FF / Mozilla. If I had to recommend an IRCD I would suggest using hyperion which is used by Freenode, one of the largest IRC servers in the world. Additionally, if you are really that anal about overcoming your blatent ignorance then just open an IRC room on freenode. It's an open server where anyone can connect to irc.freenode.net and create any room they like assuming the name isn't taken although, if you do, I would read a little on chanserv since if you don't register your channel and the room becomes empty then someone else can take it.

Also, just like a browser and an IRCD, picking a good IRC client ensures your system is secure. I would recommend XChat at the top of the list although a more popular and IMHO less trustworthy client for windows is mIRC. I personally use irssi but you can't install it in windows and it is not graphical so don't go with XChat and create (and if I were you, register) a room on irc.freenode.net.
