For some of the more stout 12V systems, I've just used the secondary of a buck-boost transformer. Seems I can get them quicker than the bigger regular LV lighting transformers. Overcurrent protection can be a little bit of a puzzle, but I've used an SSU for that.

That's over 80 Amps there. You will have to install a rather large secondary conductor for such a monstrocity.
Are you planning to construct a distribution panel for the loads? Something with proper overcurrent protection?

I know some of the more ellaborate outdoor installations will use a breaker panel, wired for 12 volts. Get on the AOLP website to see some stuff that'll knock your socks off. http://aolponline.org/

I found this transformer.. it takes (4) 300 watt circuits and has voltage drop table for long runs (up to 22 volts) http://www.hadco.com/Hadco/Public/Pr...?pid=374&Id=24

Not for nothing, but when the scope gets this intense, wouldn't a line of line voltage fixtures be more practical?

Article 411.3
Lighting 'systems' operating at 30v or less shall be listed. 411.2 also.

I think all this "listed lighting system" jazz was a spectacular lobbying effort on the part of some manufacturers at some point in time. 12 volts is 12 volts, no matter who's transformer it comes from.
