2008 code book question
I have yet to buy the 2008 code book but will this week but would like to know what is the minimum distance a water heater can be from a panel. A set of plans I have show the water heater right next to the 200 amp 3 phase panel and my gut says no. Nashville has a 6 foot rule but thats just Nashville and this job is about an hour out of Nasville. Inputs please. Thanks in advance.

As long as the panel has the clearance it needs from art. 110 then the water heater can be right next to the panel.

Thanks, I knew the old code book didn't mention anything but I never really understood why not and always thought Nashvilles rule was a littler tough. I figure 2 or 3 feet would be more in line. Thanks again
P.S. -Any retiring electrician want to sell me there code book for 20 bucks .

Racer The 2008 has been out for some time, not owning past and current NEC's for an electrician is like a not owning 9" linemans (Klein's).
I just do not get it.

Why would you want the water heater next to the panel? legal or not that's just piss poor planning.

How do you figure? What would the issue be?
Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

FYI Brian John, I own the '93,'95,'99,'02,'05 code books but the '08 code has just been adopted by Tennessee on Jan28,'09 and I went to an '08 code changes course that supplied me with a pamplet of some of the major changes and exceptions to the '08 code. That has served me well to date.

My theory on new code cycles is : why wait till the jurisdiction gets around to adopting it. Go get it and start learning.
I personally acquire the newest edition of the NEC when it become available.
Sometimes it years before that edition becomes adopted, but by then I am familiar with the content.

One problem with buying a new codebook as soon as they are available is it will be full of errors.
The NFPA issue errata to correct these errors, but to date, none have been issued for the '08.

Yes sometimes you must make do with what you got, but it looks like the OP s still in the planning stages. I always look at what can go wrong will go wrong. If the pipes feeding the water heater leak I would not want it hosing down my electrical panel. I had a water heater spray down an Air traffic Control equipment room years ago. Took them off the air for about four hours, it was quite a mess. I put drip loops in all my wiring to mitigate water problems. It may never be a problem but why not plan ahead?

Which is why I buy several copies over the period of time.
Heck I bet they are still correcting the Bible, think we should wait for the final printing?

So how do you find the errors? Set them side-by-side and compare them?
Errata is availble for '05, '02, '99 and possibly the '96 though.
I'm still watching for an '08 to be issued. They're way past due if you ask me.
