Talking Any good experience with portable generators

I searched the forum and most discussions are about Kohler and Generac, I am interested in generators up to the 12K size (or so)
One person awhile back said he has sold a lot of the Champion brand and had good results.
I am looking at this Ridgid/Subaru model at Home Depot that I almost bought. The potential problem with this one is it does not have Idle control.

At this wattage, I am not sure if that would matter much, in other words, how much fuel would it actually save.

Also, for online purchasing Norwall seems to be recommended

Speaking with another contractor today, he said he replaced some GFCI devices because somebody's portable generator had no voltage regulator and they were measuring up to 300V occasionally, from the generator.

Any thoughts or opinions? It is generator season.

Go with Generac.. Kohler is over priced and you are paying more for a name..

That should generate some nice words in my direction..

My distributor doesn't even stock them and they cost almost what a 14kw does because they sell so few of them.

I have installed done at least 6 XG8000Es this and 2 GP 7500Es from generac. They are a good machine for the money. I don't think any of the portables are going to have super power quality unless you go with some of the Honda inverter models or the Generac XP line. There are probably some other premium portables in that league. I have a Husky 5500w from home depot thats been fine. It depends on what your customer wants. Most of the basic ones are good for basic needs like heat, lighting and fridges. If they demand to use their home theaters then they need to buy the better machines. Or they can get one of those fancy power conditioners. You pay either way.

Portable Generators in the 12kw range, the best seem to be anything with a Honda engine. I sold lots of Magnum 12kw's w/ Honda engines and always had great luck with them, problem is they just sold Magnum to Generac and they stopped the portable line.

Generacs are probably the bang for the buck nothing runs like a honda if you can afford the price.
