Here's some info on the government grants.
http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/g...ticeship.shtml

Quote:

Specifically, the AIG is meant to:
  • Increase access to apprenticeships in the Red Seal trades by helping apprentices cover expenses such as the purchase of tools and other materials required for learning on-the-job and travel expenses associated with classroom training;
  • Encourage the apprentices progression through the technical and on-the-job training requirements in the early years of their apprenticeship program, building momentum towards certification;
  • Promote interprovincial mobility by increasing the number of apprentices who remain in the Red Seal trades and get their Red Seal.
Through the AIG and the ACG, completing apprentices who receive their journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade could be eligible to receive a maximum of $4,000.

Thanks RyanB, some good advice. Electrical seems to be very slow right now. I am really debating between electrical,plumbing and HVAC.

I considered that things might be slow in the short term but there's a long-term future in the trades. Lots of guys retiring in the next few years and lots of opportunities in lighting, green energy, automation, etc. I have a bit of an edge because of my past experience and tech diploma in electronics.

I don't have any related experience in plumbing and HVAC but they sound like good trades too.

Good luck man.

mehg, it encourages more people to get into the trades. And it help cover the cost of going to school. They don't typically have trades scholarships (that I am aware of in the school around here) so it's nice that we get assistance too.

The only thing being over 25 and going through post secondary education stops you doing is claiming on your parents supplimental health insurance if you still live with them. So wear protection when picking up college chicks you can't claim for the penicilin anymore
