Go with the Sonos. It's expensive but worth it. If you have any questions my friend Devin, who's also an electrician, knows everything about Sonos and will definitely help you. Let me know what I can do for you Tony.

Regarding wireless, I can't speak for the quality, I've honestly never tried it. But I would be very interested to learn why they couldn't match the sound quality of wired speakers. Is it because of the sub-par ability of the amplifiers in each speaker?
CS, I don't understand what the relays do?

I have two sound systems in my home and love them both. The good one is a Yamaha Sound Projector with a Martin Logan Subwoofer...both for $2k in 2006. The cheap one is a Monoprice iPod dock with remote...$40 in 2012. Take your pick.
BTW if you have a 12 foot wall the Yamaha creates a 12 foot wall of sound (much fuller and more realistic than 6+sub IMHO). It does it with one optical wire, in this setup from a Mac Mini.

Sonos, I have it, super easy to hook up and links to your computer hd, ipod library, pandora, iheartradio, etc.
One unit needs an internet connection, all the others connect wireless.
Listening to it now.

I think you might regret it later. We are on an edge of a change in music delivery. The hottest thing is wireless speakers for you phone. It's just a matter of time before this done for homes. Dr. Dre beats have them the apple store has them. If your phone can send music wireless why won't entertainment equipment.

I'm aboard with all of that. The blue tooth "Jambox" works wirelessly with iPhone. No more leaving the iPhone mounted to the radio. The phone controls the speaker. It's brilliant.

Just for the record....I have a BOSE Acoustimass 7 [circa 1990?] system....and it cost too much even then...you can buy it on eBay for $350 today [not from me]...and I think that is still over-priced.

SO i would need to get four speakers, 2 for living room, 2 for outside a sonos box with amp built in and im good to go..? I dont think im really interested in wireless, I would rather just go with wired ones. Im assuming that the sonos gets a cat 5 or something to my desktop router which will allow me to use my tablet and phone to control music.. and if i want my tv to be tied into the living room speakers i would need to get a cat 5 ? to the sonos..?
I plan on looking it all up but just looking to get a basic idea of what im in for....
My wife is having two babies so I am trying to make her comfee and happy............................................. ........................before the sh it hits the fan..

If your looking for good/cheap in wall/ceiling speakers Monoprice is almost impossible to beat. http://www.monoprice.com/products/su...09&cp_id=10837 . I have used these for distributed audio as well as surround sound and everyone loves the sound (especially when they find out how much they cost.)
As far as streaming audio you can't really beat the Apple airport express. Its $100 and it will wirelessly stream audio from any iphone/ipad or itunes on a computer to your stereo system. If you want to get even fancier you can download the free remote app for your iphone/ipad and control your itunes on your computer. Add a decent 2 room receiver and you've got yourself a home audio system for less than $1000(assuming your an iphone/ipad user). We have added the itunes/airport express feature to many Crestron systems and they have all ended up abandoning the multi thousand dollar media server and just use their itunes because its so much easier and they already have the library setup anyways.
The other nice thing about the itunes remote app is that it lets you control the volume from the iphone as well. Only downside from something like a Sonos system is that you can't change sources and control different audio in different rooms as easily.

Whole house audio systems are quite awesome, I install in 1 of 10 new homes I do and the markup on them is ridiculous and the homeowners end up being a marketing dream. Buy for $3000 sell for $10,000.. If I could that's all I would install everyday.

Yup,and Vac systems are great money makers. The first time I showed a woman home owner a toe kick vac pan, there was no stopping her, she bought every accessory that they made and upgraded to the best canister.
Home automation can be the same way, just depends on the client.
