Box kick on short pcs of EMT
This came after a long day of pulling wire and nothing going right.
If you have a short stretch of EMT (6' for example) between and LB and an RB panel, do you put box kicks in the EMT or not?
I put kicks in a piece of 3/4" EMT coming out of the LB and going into the RB panel. The boss informs me that box kicks are a waste of time for a 6' piece of conduit.
In general, I do not argue stupid things with the guy who signs my paycheck, but I have a tough time letting this one slide.
What is your opinion?
Rick

6'? Ya I kick those. Would fell like a hack if I didn't. If my bender fits on it 4 times, it gets a kick.

Agree 100%.
It is even easier with a kicker.

I kick everything and also hardly ever resort to unistrut for anything less than a rack of pipe. When I see a single run of conduit along a building that for reasons I cannot myself fathom has to always be projected away from the surface onto channel, to me that looks like-- how do I say this delicately, crap.....

I'd put a box set (offset to enter a box), not a kick. If your boss doesn't want you to use offsets, at least ask him for cowboys, mineralics, or whatever you call them where you are to make it look neat and properly supported.

250 for a kicker per size, and more stuffs to lug around. But they are convenient if I am borrowing someone else's.

so I guess on a 6' piece, he just throws a single one-hole strap in the middle and bends it down to the wall? Tell him I said he is a hack.

I can kick them farther than that. I've kicked them up to 40 feet on a good day with the wind at my back.

My opinion is that you work for a lazy ass hack, that somehow thinks that you taking 20 seconds to offset for box/panel is a waste of time, Tell him for me to not cut 3 other contractors throats because he wants to win the bid and cut every corner imaginable. How does he plan on complying with strapping the conduit within 3' of termination ?

I have used standoff straps in this situation. It just depends on how visible and where the run is going. The standoff is perfect to replace a box offset. Call me a hack if you want.

if he uses stand off straps Then its not really a hack, just an extra thing to have in the bags. I said if its a one-hole strap its a hack.

A standoff will work but how is that saving any time ? I bet I could bend a box offset in the amount of time it takes you to install that. I will also be ahead of the game by about 40 cents

I won't offset if it's 1/2" or less. Over 3/4" is going to start looking like crap.

So for a 6' piece of pipe you are not installing any straps. Give me a break. I'd rather spend the 40 cents then waste time with double offsets.

I'm spoiled. I got my ½" Lil Kicker at an auction for $5 because I was the only one who knew what it was. I got a ¾" Lil Kicker for $45 on ebay.
