Default electrical fire

Alright guys, got one for you. I have been called to a residence two times for electrical fire. The home owner has called the fire department and all. According to the home owner the fire department and the neighbors smell the "burning wires". I have not talked to fire department or neighbors, so I dont know what they know. I do know the older couple, they are a nice old couple-blah,blah, blah. Not talking bad about them simply stating what is known -they are paranoid about a lot of things! I have opened up panels, devices, EXH fans, been under house, in the attic, you name it. I can not find so much as a discolored wire anywhere. Used my meter to check everything. Now for what i do know, everytime i get down to the supply vents and smell ( when the heat is off ) I do smell the "burning wires" and they have verified that is the smell but they insist that it is not coming from the heat. It is gas heat. It is not dust burning on the aux heat strips which they claim they do not have. The unit itself has 240v power. I believe that it could be the blower motor. Can not see the name plate on the unit so can verify the electrical part is right. The question is---Have any of you guys run into this or have any clues as to what it could be? I am keeping an open mind that the neighbors and fire dep. have smelled this. When these people smelled it they were not in the house, but outside. No smoke has been seen. I dont know what else to offer that might help.

Ballast? I also had a situation similar to yours. Seemed to be able to smell it through the vents but it ended up being the vent-hood motor, might check that also.

Well, plastic sucked into the return, even tiny little strips like used in Easter baskets smell like hot insulation when they get hot.

They had the HVAC guys out the first day after I visited the first time. Not saying thats supposed to mean anything. They did complete maintainance check. This is occurring in the middle of the night when there is basically nothing on except maybe gas heat. I am gonna go by though and look at a couple of ideas you guys gave me. I didnt wire this house but I still feel like this couple are relying on me to keep them safe. Seeing how my GF works for the Doc. Thanks for the ideas.

Check for "supplemental heating appliances" in the house.
