As with most trades, it is a career that will likely allow you to feed and shelter your family throughout your lifetime. Be careful though as the first few years the money is not so good. Best of luck!

It's certainly the best trade.
Some days I wonder if it was the best " career choice" .
Every time I have to use a portable toilet on a jobsite, I pull out a sharpie and write "Stay in school!" on the inside of the door. I'm not a big fan of graffitti or vandalism but I feel the need to send a message to any impressionable youths who still have a choice.

I went to college and still managed to find myself doing this. It is the best trade though.

It is often seasonal work with travelling involved. Starting pay can be low

This the worse possible field to get into. The work is, hot, dirty and almost very electrician is a true a**hole. Try air traffic contoller thats where its at. This type of work is limited to what you can learn and do. Also the pay sucks

I have directed more than one person to this website in the past, and they've found it helpful. http://www.careerdirectonline.org/ It does a personality profile on you for free, and for a nominal extra fee it will steer your particular bent toward compatible career fields. People claim it's pretty accurate in pairing you up with what you're likely to be good at and interested in.
My personality profile was "Strategic Thinker". Here's a link to my particular results:

Yeah, tried it as well. I am a "Director" apparently. I guess director and bum must be closely related.

I can only speak for myself, I have been in the electrical field for 26 + years.
I managed to stay married and raise 2 kids. I never missed a days work due to lack of work or lay offs.
The trade will "give" you as much as your willing to "take" from it. In other words there are a multitude of options in the electrical trade. I tried residential at first - Hated it. Tried Service work for a year - hated it.
Tried commercial - stayed with it for many many years. I branched into security and fire alarm as well. I am now an AHJ that inspects commercial electric.
Some enjoy residential, some enjoy service, some commercial. Control wiring is another avenue.
Some like Brian John have carved a nice living doing testing.
As far as it being the best trade? Of course the electricians will say it is.
Ask a plumber they will say the same. The same for carpenters.

Electrical is bad in the field. It makes the horses sickly and the cows quit giving milk.

It is more profitable than a potato field and smells better than a broccoli field.
