emf's and cancer
Recently a close friend of my wife's that she teaches with and I did the electrical for their kitchen remodel complained of a headache one night after work by the end of the night her speech was slurred and the side of her face had no feeling. An insueing trip to the ER and a MIR the next day found a tumor in her head. That was ten days ago, friday they went in surgically to find it malignant and to large to do anything about. THe worst possible news, a death sentence basically. THey also found it to be twice as large as it was expected to be which is horrible because she has a 15 and 12 year old daughter. Now here is the kicker, before this year she was at another school in the same district for nine years, a school with main edison transmission lines boardering school property. This school has had three teachers with brain tumors and two teachers with colon cancer all in the past five years. At the end of last week the staff sought legal councel and gave the school a 72 hour notice to start an investigation. So my question is what are some the of the links between EMF and cancer rumors you guys have heard about.
thanks BK

You need to get ahold of Karl Reily, the expert on that.
"School Measurement Study Shows Internal Net Currents Create High Magnetic Fields. (By Karl Riley, ELF Magnetic Surveys)
Karl Riley accounts his experience with a pilot study for the California EMF Program school measurement project. The study revealed the important role of internal wiring error as a source of elevated magnetic fields in schools and other buildings.

I think it would be more helpfull if you would let us know what area of the country and town your are talking about. As this might be more of a geographic thing.
Ill never understand why you guys just dont put your location on these sites? What excatly are you afraid of?
Its really annoying when people ask questions were the location would be of great help in answering the question.

Everything I've read and heard is more anecdotal than scientific. Doesn't mean there is no connection between high energy fields and cancer, but it doesn't mean there is, either.
From an early age, I worked around medium to high level RF fields and as far as I know, I never had any real effect from them. Heck, I used to hold my hand across the waveguide cover of a pretty high powered radar -- with a quarter in my palm -- until my hand got too hot to hold it there. Pretty stupid, but it helped the students understand the effects of mismatching and "pulling" the magnetron due to mismatches.
I guess the strongest argument is that such a vast number of people have been exposed to high level EMF and have no ill effects. Doesn't mean some people won't have ill effects, but I don't think the threat can be generalized.

EMF cancer ????
Well i think its a very interesting subject since we all work in the electrical trade and spend time in and around magnetic fields all day. Animal research failed to prove it . But looking into old stuff i read once that everyone who worked with Nikola Tesla in his lab all died from cancer of one form or another but thats here say. Can we prove it ? Just words in a book. I read lots of claims on high voltage and people who are getting cancer its all over the internet just look up emf on line. When i was in the Navy dry dock refit time ship yard . They degauss the ships after years at sea to demagnetise the hull they rap it with large cables and use high voltage high emf fields to cancel the earths natural magnetic magnetism of the ships hull and its effects on the metal hull . High EMF they sent us to school and were told it does and can effect your health meaning cancer and memory loss. Major safety limits were imposed when the field was charged around the ship . You could feel it at 1000 feet meaning your hair on your arms tingle raise up. You cant see it, but you can sure feel it .Best to ya take care

If you make it through that post, will you paraphrase it for me? I tried to read, but my head hurt after the third line and I gave up.

When I was in Electrical Engineering school, I had a professor that was an Army Electrical Engineer sometimes if we finished early he would tell us stories of guys getting electrocuted from a large EMF. It was scary to say the least. I barly remember him mentioning something about guys getting sick with cancer. I wish I could remember more, but I have to ASSume there is some factual info out there. Time for some lawyers to get to work on discovery.

There are way too many things in the environment we may not know cause problems.
When I was a kid my dad worked in a government office next to a shop where they did teletype maintenance. They cleaned the printers by hooking them up to a test tape that exercised all the mechanism functions while it ran in an open tank of carbon tetrachloride. All the guys I knew that worked in the shop died of liver cancer, liver or kidney trouble, or some other kind of cancer. They used the stuff for dry cleaning and in fire extinguishers for years till it was proved to be a problem. Wiki the stuff and see how much was in the air for a long time (and still is)
I grew up in a house that sat on a street with power lines running along it, as did many others along that street, and many other streets. One of the things we looked foreword to as kids when we had birthdays and other special days was to get go down to the big sand pile at the mill to play. People hauled that stuff all over town for fill, too. The EPA spent millions removing those uranium mill tailings in the 80's. I'm sure it would be impossible to correlate power line caused health issues in my home town vs tailings radiation caused problems as the stuff was everywhere. And, we don't know what stuff we are are around every day might be causing problems. Who knew 50 years ago that doing all your cooking with certain kinds of fat and eating lots of red meat was bad for you? They put radon fans in many new houses now. The fumes from overheated Teflon in pans looks like it might be a health issue. Exactly what are you sniffing when you experience that "new car" smell? How much of the stuff you are around every day doesn't hurt you but might hurt your kids - like diabetes, autism, etc.
I'm no expert, but I suspect that some of the everyday things we are around now will be found to be the cause of various health issues. And, I expect power lines to be a very small factor in the mix.
No, I not an environmental wacko or activist. I just pay attention to what goes on around me and wonder what we don't really know about some of this stuff vs what we're told - - and, if anybody's trying to find out.

I agree with itsunclebill. I think we are going to see the results of some pretty bad environmental behaviors for a long time. Likewise, I worked in a shop where teletypes were also repaired and carbon tet was everywhere. I also used MEK (methyl-ethyl-ketone) like there was no tomorrow. Uranium tailings, sand and gravel produced with uranium in them, even concrete with uranium!
Charcoal and charcoal lighting fluid, lead based paints, asbestos (remember blowing dust out of the bell housing of stick-shift cars and trucks and arcing brake shoes?)
We interact with the environment all the time, 24/7, so it has to be hard to decide which part is most dangerous.

lost time emf stops the clock
Well a few years back we did a plant upgrade to a G E 45 mw t38 reheat / add unit 5 . We were pulling cables to controls to mot air breakers in the yard this was a existing power plant. The first day my wrist watch was slow off by 40 minutes at the end of the day. On the 2nd day it was still slow loss in time 30 minutes didnt think much about it thought my watch was bad . Now 3rd day one of the plant engineers was with us he told me a quartz watch would not work in the yard high emf stops them . But the strange thing was when it was a wet day the watch would be slow but not as much so we ask plant engineer. He said, well when it rains we save power on the grid we like that , then laughing said but the linemen they dont like them days . If EMF can stop a watch what did it do to us ? Just added this thought someone might be interested in what it can do . best to ya take care

A couple of years ago I did a lot of work replacing RTU's in some substations north of Toronto. These substations were 230Kv - 27.6Kv/16Kv. At the end of the day I noticed being a lot more exhausted than usual and I had to leave my pen tester in the truck as it would not stop beeping. I certainly do think that EMF's have an effect on us and some people may be more sensitive to EMF's than others. But are the EMF's radiating from a transmission line worse than the radiation from a CRT or a microwave that we all have in our houses? That being said, I still think if I were buying property somewhere and there were transmission lines close by I probably would re consider the purchase.
