Default General Trade Information

Hey everyone,

I live in Adelaide, Australia and am new to this website. I have been reading posts to help gather information on the electrical trade as i am very interested and am trying to decide whether to pursue an electrical apprenticeship.

I was hoping that some of you could give me a rundown on what being an electrician is like, jobs and tasks encountered, the positives and negatives and future career pathways. Also does maths play a big role in the day to day works on an electrician?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Since you are in Australia, I know little if anything about your country and how an electrician fares in your beautiful region. In the US there are many ways to get started. The best option is the electrical apprenticeship. Most of the time people just start as helpers. Helpers are usually not paid well and do all the grunt work. Guy's that just are hired off the street. Do you have unions in Australia? If so contact them regarding an apprenticeship program. If you do not have Unions or are not sure how to contact them you can look for electrical contractors that are looking for help. Very few apprenticeship programs available with non union shops in my travels in the US. Do not expect to make much money at first. (US standard). Expect to bust your butt (US standard). Expect to be hot, cold and miserable at times. Expect to ready to buy your own hand tools (US standard) Expect to rise early and get home late (US standard sometimes) If you had your smarts about you, go to college or trade school and get an education. Then decide what you want to do. You see if you keep up this way you will end up like me.
