It is not strapping it is engine speed or the rear end (the generator not the prime mover) design.
Strapping is the connection of the generator leads for output voltage.

To order change the HZ format you will have to change the prime mover speed setting.

However some are easy to do it and some are not all it depending on the unit itself some do have electronic control and some have mech contol set up.

The electronic verison is useally pretty easy to do it.

However there is other gotcha along the way when you change the HZ format you must double check the output voltage you may have to restrap the generator leads to get correct voltage per nameplate and connection diagram there.

Merci,Marc

The same as the term called Connection.

The other way is if you have multi conductors will be tied together it sometime called strapping just like grouping all the conductors.

Merci,Marc

I also have never heard stapping used in this sense.

Are you referring to something like a 3-phase motor with 9 leads? You hook them up one way for the lower voltage, and another way for the higher voltage?

Some large generators have bus connections for changing the voltage, these bus look like straps hence the term strapping. The flexible conductors from the generator are permanently mounted on studs, relocating the straps permits quick changing of voltage, this is big in the rental business.

Similar to transformers?

The one's I've dealt with are the flat braided conductors with heavy heat shrink over them. I know these aren't used on the very large gensets, but certainly on smaller one's.

MArc during the 2001 dotcom bust, a rigger I know got stuck with 20 750-kw UPS's systems to recoup his losses he scrapped them. He had 100'00 of the flexible straps from 12" to 24" rated 500-1000 amps.

I took about 50 or 60 of them for connecting CB's to out high current test sets.
