Default Home Inspection.

Hi,Guys. I got a call from a customer who wants me to go do an inspection. The house got hit with lightning,so she contacts the insurance company. They instruct her to contact an electrician to make sure everything is ok.what exactly should I be inspecting?Im thinking on doing a panel check, checking grounding with a ground meter and voltages at all receps ect.Any suggestions will be helpful thanks again.

This is a can of worms due to the danger of insulation damage to wires hidden in walls.

Remove all GFCI's before megging, also make sure everything is unplugged.

You can't meg terminated wires. This is a common request from insurance companies dealing with lightning strikes. Every wire in the entire house must be megged.

Most all the insurance companies I have dealt with want you to visually inspect the panel and devices. I have yet to have an insurance company want the wiring meggered for a lightning SURGE which is what usually happens. Direct hits they usually require circuit meggering.

Most insurance companies call because the homeowner has made a claim on damaged appliances. You can ring the crcuits affected and visually inspect the devices.

As for megging try this experiment. take a peice of romex 12/2 and meg it now lay a short section out flat and take a blow tourch to it until the coating is completly removed allow it to cool and the meg it again.
