Default Intersystem grounding lug

I've avoided them, but the AHJ wants one on a service change and relocated panel and meter. I saw one hanging out of the meter box on #6 copper looking like an afterthought and I'm wondering how others are handling this requirement for residential services. Seems to me, the lug can be installed on the exposed GEC between the house and the rod, but I'm remembering that mess hanging out of the meter box.

Another new service down the street either doesn't have one or I sure can't find it. Aren't they supposed to be easily located?

I still think the first guy needing it should install it, but I guess the code thinks otherwise.

Then you haven't seen 250.94 in the '08 yet.

I saw one today on display at CED. It was the type that grips the meter can at the top. Really ugly. Did not look too ULish in the way it grabbed the socket, sort of like the bell transformers that had a screw that when driven all the way in forced the bell xfmrs to grip the 1/2" ko's (sometimes) before door xfmr's with locknut attachmets were common. I hope they carry independant ones that you can screw to the structure and then feed with a bonding conductor from the service bonding point, that would look at least a bit better.

Yes, I have. I'm not disputing the requirement, I'm wondering what technique is being used. I sure didn't like the looks of that lug hanging out of the meter box and the GEC seems the lost logical place.

This product looks like something to consider for compliance with this requirement:

In my area we don’t generally need to put them in unless we want to for service changes and relocations on existing buildings, since the grounding conductors for CATV and telephone are already installed in the building, per 250.94 exception.
We are normally only required to use them for new construction or if for some reason there is no existing CATV or telephone service to the building at the time.
