Default Journeyman Certification

I'm wondering what you guys think about this.
I have my Electrical Contracting License.
I've been an electrician for just over 10 years.
I've never tested for Journeyman Certification on any level.
Do I need that certification for anything or should I just press on with my license? -Tajon

Do you work for yourself or for someone else?

You only need a certification if you are going to work under someone who holds a C10 contractors license.

At this time I work for myself. I have a C-10 License. In the past I have caught a bit of flack from my colleagues for obtaining my license without becoming Journeyman Certified. Did I skip or miss out on some sort of right of passage?
Or am I just worrying about small things?

You are fine with your C10. The CA certification is rather new and it is really bs. The test is a joke and just about anyone can lie and say they have 8,000 hours to sit for the exam. If you ever decided to work for a C10 contractor or sweeten up you're resume you might consider getting it.

I took my C10 exam before the ca state certification exam. I now have both but really don't need either because i work full time for a large company who does not require either.

Tajon,

Go ahead and get your state certification. Arnold need the money. But seriously, it's only a couple of hundred, and while your sitting in your office waiting for the phone to ring, you might stumble across a PW craigslist ad for a fast 2 grand a week.

I bit the bullet myself and just paid the $400 renewal fee, just in case my work dried up.

Actually it was the unions that made the state mandate the test in hopes that all the non-union electricians wouldn't be able to pass it thus all the work going to the union shops. Well it back fired greatly on them, with a good majority of the union electricians not being able to pass the exam(which as everyone knows is a joke).

I'm 700 true hours away from my test, I've thought about lieing on the hours to get my card, but I think I will wait it out a couple more months unless I cant find work as a 5th year apprentice, then I will take the test.

You are absolutely correct. The IBEW wanted a tie hold on the industry and they wanted everyone to go to their schools. That was not going to happen. Now anyone can pass the test and say they are a Journeyman.
