Just got laid off
I checked to see if there were any recent threads about the same topic, but none came up.
Been a helper for a year in the (commercial) electrical trade, and for that company the duration.
Things have been slow at the job site, and some of us had been at the warehouse counting screws (literally).
But nonetheless, they let most (if not all) of the helpers go with a contact to somebody at Tradesman International.
I keep calling them but I can't seem to be able to reach the guy I need to.
I'm not sure if this is at all tied into the economy or not, as my company had several jobs lined up, one which were an army barracks, but they seem to be too far off at the moment to keep us all on.
I guess we'll see what happens.
EDIT: Got an interview and I think I got a good chance, check page 2 >

Hey buddy.
It's not New Orleans, but we work in and around Baton Rouge and definately aren't counting screws.
We could REALLY use an experienced helper

I'm from Jersey but I thought it was a lot of rebuilding going on down there. I had thought about taking a vacation and volunteer some of my time. Good luck in your search, you may have to pack up and move.

I'm actually originally from Philadelphia, born and raised.
I've only been living here in New Orleans for a year with my girlfriend, whom I met through (wouldn't you know), volunteering for 3 months down here soon after the storm.

You can at least take solace in the thought that if they had you counting screws, they really didn't want to lay you off. Bide your time someplace and keep in touch with them. They'll call you back when they sell the next couple jobs.

Good luck in the job hunt, I would think that with all the stuff going on down there that you won't be out long. Keep a positive attitude and you should get something, use the power of positive thinking.

Applied at a small local supermarket, 9 bucks an hour full time.
I've applied all over this town today, riding my bike so I don't have to burn gas.
On-line too, where I got a response for an interview next week for a maintenance/janitorial job at a hotel.
Asked around and found out that the project supervisor is thinking he may need us back in 2 weeks or so. But it's all "he says she says".
Whether they realize it or not, I'm also do in for a raise.
If I don't get it when they want me back I may not go back at all.

I suppose you're right, maybe I should wait 'til they hire me back first, assuming I haven't found anything better.
Regardless I'm still due in for a raise.
They never followed through with "a raise every 3 months" they told me and all the other guys when we got hired. Instead they were raising us 2 dollars every year. Technically May would be 1 year since my last raise.
1 of 2 things will have to happen come the day they hire me back on.
1.) I get my raise
2.) I stop working in panels. I stop bringing my "extra" tools that make their jobs a little more convenient. Stop driving to more than one job site in a day without gas compensation. Stop fixing the mistakes of the other helpers.
If they do not wish to recognize the extra effort I put it then it will be time for me to look elsewhere. They kept on a guy that gets paid more than me that does nothing but sit around the warehouse and hasn't set foot on a jobsite in months.
This is a decision I am able to make at the moment. And a decision I will continue to consider. I have found several bull**** jobs to keep things tied together and I have several thousands saved up that I never touch. I'm aware not everyone can be so bullish. But if it is an option I will continue to consider it seriously and just play things by ear.

The sooner your figure out that nobody owes you a darned thing, the happier you'll be in life. You're not "due" anything. You're in for a tough row to hoe if you keep that attitude you're displaying right now.

I don't believe I'm being unreasonable.
In fact, on the flipside I've gotten criticism for doing work that a properly trained, properly paid electrician should be doing.
I do not think it is unreasonable to request a raise for putting forth the effort within a timely fashion. Nor am I asking for anything different than what other individuals within the company have received.
I would certainly be in a tough row if I worked more, invested more into something that wasn't going to pay accordingly.
Then again, maybe you are right.
The illegals live by your words.
