Default Megger

So, I just grabbed a nice old 500 volt megger at a flea market for 20 bucks but although it looks like it has neverbeen used it will not read infinity when the terminals are open and the handle is cranked I guess it will make A nice paperweight!

I just bought a Fluke 1507 Insulation Tester a few days ago. For those of us who want a megger to check cables, switches, motors, etc. this works just great, and it's $500 or so. And it's a Fluke.

It's not as automated as some of the high-end ones (which are 6 to 10 times the cost) but for testing 'normal' stuff it's gangbusters. It will read up to 11 gigaohms, and put out up to 1000V. Perfect. It has automatic bleed-down of voltage, so you won't zap yourself quite as often.

The 1503 is cheaper, but it can't do low voltages (down to 50V) and it 'only' reads up to 2 gigaohms. More importantly, it doesn't have the 'compare' function. You can set the 'compare' function to a certain value, up to 500 megaohms, and instead of watching numbers you just watch for a green light to come on. There is a test button on the probe, so you can test a bank of disconnects in no time. It's lovely.

Just a biased opinion from a happy owner. I had an Extech megger before. It was absolute GARBAGE by comparison.

Which model Extech was it, and what made it garbage? The lack of features, the quality, or both?

I picked up an Amprobe megohmeter model AMC-2 for $50 at a garage sale about 12 years ago. It still works perfect and looks brand new. I can crank it all day. It was about a grand brand new. It looked like it was never used when I got it.

Both. Few features, and low quality. The probes had plasticky-feeling, cheap wires and generally low-rent parts. The Fluke, which was less than twice the cost, has leads that are buttery-soft even in cold weather, and the probes come apart so you can use alligator clamps or whatever. They're just a joy to work with. The extech just felt like junk.

I bought it because I have always wanted a megger of my own and I knew it was a good deal. All meters outside of my T plus pro are supplied by my company so I haven't had the need to ever get one unless I found a great deal on one. The only problem with it besides the meter not reading properly was a crack in the Bakelite case on the inside which I fixed with some epoxy.
