Default residental service conductors in raceways

article 240 requires that secondary transformer conductors be protected in a raceway. I would like to see the same requirement for service conductors on a dwelling. A cable tv installer putting in a new line shorted out my neighbor's service and caused a fire by accidently drilling into the se cable, luckily the cable guy didn't get injured or killed and the house didn't burn down but the whole service needed to be replaced. I'm surprised that I don't see this happening more often, it doesn't take much effort to damage SE cable. Do you guys see this as a problem in your area? What are your thoughts?

no one around here uses SE for service entrance conductors...it's all done in conduit...it looks better and it seems to be a bit safer as well..

You and me both.

It has never been allowed here. I couldn't believe it when I learned a couple years ago, via the internet, that this was still an acceptable practice. Accessible, unfused, unprotected wire/cable is stupid.

They last longer than 25 years when a 90 degree or better sun isn't beating down on them 350 days a year. They're also typically protected by EMT sleeved over the SE cable for about 10'.

I haven't seen anybody capable of using a tool accidentally zapping SE. It is always pretty darned obvious and it is supposed to be no more than five feet inside the structure (local requirement) now changed to "The least amount of SE possible" inside the structure. This usually means the meter socket and panel are back-to-back and not very accessible to accidental damage.

That said, I bet severely damaged SE would tend to disconnects itself by melting along with a lot of noise and commotion. Bet it got that guy's attention.

Yes. It started out as a photo of a butterfly in Japan.

I don't understand why this is such a big deal to you when there are millions of homes with service cable that never have a single problem with it. Just because some bonehead cable TV installer doesn't check before he drills is not reason to condemn a wiring method. That same drill bit would have gone right through PVC too, by the way.
