Whoa, let's get one thing straight here, when I discovered this I had already cut out the service downstream of this, near the service crimps. This was discovered when I was unwrapping the dry rotted tape off the grip, if it would have exploded at that point it would have been an unfortunate accident for me, as we EC's here in NJ do not use the POCO for OH DC/RC.

I have come across those old time one piece service drops that look like seu cable dipped it roofing tar..

Those are dangerous because the conductors are always cracked..

I keep shrink wrap in the truck to slide over the exposed cracked conductors before I connect my temp power..

There comes a time when people who volunteer their service need to step back and see if it is better for them to retire. A red flag is when they become "cranky" and lose all sense of reality by making decisions that really don't make any sense..

Heh heh....I've had that feeling way too many times. Last week in fact, I actually listened to that inner voice and stopped what I was about to do.

If you were standing securely on the roof, the worst that would happen (probably) is a short that would have burned free .

Unless your face was stupid close to the wire, you were in more danger of getting hurt in the proceeding fall than by the flash.
