This section of 10-3 was observed in a customer's basement. They had a brand new washing machine, but the dryer was suspiciously missing. When the customer was asked (upon seeing this section of NM cable), "Were you having any problems with your dryer?", they responded, "Yeah, we had to get rid of it. Every time we ran it, something smelled like it was burning, then it finally quit working".

This 10-3 was fed from the main lugs, without overcurrent protection. They're lucky it burnt off before it burned the house down. I can't take a very good close-up picture with my junky camera, but my eye can see the tell-tale signs of mouse chew on this wire in the burned section. Mice make a very distinctive serrated pattern when they chew the cable jacket and conductor insulation.
