Umm, being in the pit with it coming down ain't so fun.
I had to ride the top of an elevator with a ladder in hand so I could install smoke detectors at the top of the shaft. The operator was dependable so I didn;t worry too much and I had an E stop on top so once I was set, it wasn;t moving until I allowed it.

Haven't been in a pit as such but there was something that allowed the same phenomena. Really throws off the equilibrium for sure.
We have a haunted house locally that has what we affectionately call the vomit room. There is a large cylindrical gizmo that has a walkway through the middle of it. There is fluorescent paint on the tunnel and black lights. The tunnel rotates around you as you go through it.
It is impossible to walk straight. If it weren;t for the handrails, everybody would be falling off the walkway.
It's a blast.

Riden On Top Elevator Cab
Well ive been there Bob know what you mean , we had two side by side elevators and two electricians with smoke heads one was me . That needed to be installed our fire alarm crew forgot to install so we did it for them. guess i didnt think much about it until the car gets close to the top then i was getting real humble . because the ottis guys said you guys ready and theres a high speed and a low speed going up well they used the high speed and it was to say the least i was real humble . Nap there was no cab on this job just a empty shaft to the sky all the way 35 stories open no rails or anything . best to ya take care

I understand that. I was also responding to bob about riding the top of the elevator.
the mind plays some real fun tricks on you, doesn't it? I suppose one could get motion sickness and never be moving.

Once while standing in the elevator pit the cable came down and hit me in the shoulder, now there was no way the elevator could hit me, but it scared me as much as anything.

if you are in the wrong place it can hit you. As a matter of fact we had an elevator guy nearly get cut in half when the car he was working on (and obviouslly did not lock out or most likely eventurn off) come down while he was in the pit.
Big investigation.
It was a bad way to be reminded that we must LOTO.
true story.

Pennsylvania require g.f.c.i.outlets in elevator rooms, pits, ect.
Had a call to a coal prep plant where a racoon got into the elevator electric busbar compartment (480)and died.Call was an odd burning smell. The laborer with me really lost his lunch.

I've never had a chance to look up out of elevator pit because all the high rise jobs I've worked on the GC keep the shaft decked out I guess so if something fell it wouldn't all the way to the bottom. I bet it would be a crazy site to be able to look all the way out the roof to the sky.

The pits we were in there was no way to get hit, they were 8' below the lowest level of the pit and the top of the pit was level with the pogo stick.

I know what you're saying. Been there myself a few times. I was just saying you can get hurt (killed) if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. It can get freaky if you let your mind run a bit.
Even the elevator guy that did that for a living screwed up. That's what cost him his life.

A building we were working in had a building engineer go into the pit to blow a joint, He fell and got tangled up in the floor tracking ribbon shredded the guy. He laid there till the next day. Lost his job, no workers comp and no job referral.

Coriolis Force
Well i looked into what happened , and why because our crew is still wondering ? This is what i found the earth rotates at a speed and the wind blows the clouds at a speed but earth rotates west to east the clouds above travel at angles meaning not rotating with the earths rotation they move from southernly to northernly directions and at bending paths an angles so if your looking up a shaft your eyes see the clouds real speed its faster then the earths speed because its taken a shorter path physically your movin slower but your brain tells you its faster thur your eyes , when you step out your balance is off because you brain thinks you moven faster then your really moven , NAP you are correct !! god i hate to say that just joken guys!!!The shaft makes this 100 times more of a effect on your brain and when you go outside and look up your seein the whole sky and your brain cant sense the speed or direction of rotation enough to effect you. But if you live in a big city and your between a couple of sky scrapers look up and it should do the same thing . just had to find out why best to ya take care
