Angry Umbrella companies

I use an umbrella company called Orange Genie. I have come to this site to try to advise any contractor (all trades), DO NOT CHOOSE this company.

Every single week, they claim that there is something wrong with your wages or expenses. There never is! It turns out that the total incompetance of this company comes down from there management.

Every week I spend money for this company to sort out my tax and expenses. £45 per week, + the money I spend on phone calls to make sure sure that they are carrying out my simple instructions.

This week is the first pay week after xmas, and having 4 small boys, we are skint. Anyway, travelling home for the weekend, I pulled into the garage for fuel, only to find that my wages had not been paid into my account. Not only did this cause major embarrasment, but spoiled my whole weekend, and cost me money, as I missed a days work on Monday because this is the soonest my payment can be processed.

The EXCUSE is that they thought I get payed monthly. I have never, ever been payed monthly!
This was the last straw!!!

It is more stress to use this company, than it is to sort out your own tax and expenses.

TELL YOUR FREINDS! DO NOT- DO NOT USE ORANGE GENIE!!!!!!!

ALL TRADES.

I know of a couple of lads that use Umberalla Companies. One uses Orange. Both say they are perfect for a self employed worker. No problems at all. Strange how some things work differently for others

Never heard of this type of arrangement. However, I have sub contracted before. Is this similar? If they handle payroll, benefits, materials and bids it sounds like if you get the right one it may be beneficial to a one man band. I would be interested in information regarding these types of companies

In the USA, hiring an accounting firm might be equivalent. I don't know to what extent "umbrella companies" manage one's business, but an accounting firm can work wonders for the person who is an excellent technician, but so-so at the business part.

Rule of thumb is: Any business needs an accountant and a lawyer. ALL the laws and regulations are set up so it takes an accountant and a lawyer to manage the business affairs. That's just how it is.

This umbrella company is in the U.K. Maybe the U.S. company is very efficient, but O.G. here are certainly not. There are plenty coments posted about advising to 'steer clear' and 'avoid O.G. like the plague'.

Umbrella companies in the U.K. are designed for contractors/sub-contractors/one man bands, to have self employment status, but are actually employed by the umbrella company, eg Orange Genie, to help with taxation and other legalities.

I would like to say that this was a one off incident, but it is certainly not. I am the type of bloke whom realises that human beings make mistakes, and am willing to accept this. When total cock-ups are made time after time, I wonder if I am far too easy going. Enough is enough, and it is a definate no-no to mess with a mans money!

You have been warned!
