I don't know. Maybe you need to do the unprofitable thing that disgusts you.

The only reason I might is if I found it somehow therapeutic. Since I do not, I'm happy to pay a mechanic. Hell, I don't even mow my own grass.

No, not really. There's a good reason why the CEO of a company does not empty the wastebaskets or clean the glass on the front door. Not that he can't, but from the perspective of a shareholder, he shouldn't.

Continuous improvement should be the goal of any company. Part of continuous improvement means constantly thinking of quicker or cheaper ways to get to the same end result. Often, that means not doing it yourself, and spending your energy on things that only you are uniquely qualified to do in the quest for increasing profitability.

If I can do something like change my oil or fuel filter and it takes me less time to drop it off and pick it up, I'll do it myself.
Something that involves dragging out large amounts of tools doesn't interest me in the least. It's not that I can't but, it's someones job to do these things. I don't paint my house or cut my lawn either.

Same.

Auto repair is on my list of things I hate to do so i really like having someone to do it.

Plus then we have someone to do work on generator engines and engine driven pumps.

The problem is the grease and the "car dirt". Most of us have been conditioned on how to work inside of someone's home or office and are very careful about hand and foot prints. One day of grabbing greasy car parts can stay with you and your tools and fingernails for days.

Another thing that is detestable to most electricians is welding. It goes against everything we know but some of us still enjoy it.

Obviously, if one is a two or more truck operation, the idea is to keep what one has making $$$ in the field, while the one needing service is tended to

Time being $$$, and downtime being negative $$$$

That said, i grew up a motorhead, worked in shops as a teen, and inasmuch as am more than capable of turning a wrench, have thankfully evolved to walk upright....

Me too and while I still might enjoy turning a wrench on a pre 1972 vehicle there is not enough money to make me work on a modern van.

Well there is that for sure ........

But I also have the mind set that just lifting the hood should allow access to the engine for most tasks.

With my 70 Monte I could pull out the motor one day and have it back on the road the next day.

I did totel OEM V6 engine swap on my girls 81 Monte, the V6 was tired and she liked the car so I bought a replacment long block. Figured it would be easy .... it was about 3 full days playing with all the extra crap.

I agree to this extent. By the grace of God, I'm in a position that I don't HAVE to do the ugly tasks. On the other hand, If I show others that I'm willing to do those ugly tasks, maybe those designated to do the lesser will appreciate the responsibility of those designated to do the greater.

planned obsolesance through a variety of factions BBQ, for a time one could literally nip off and chuck the majority of those 'extras' many of those 74& up a decade vehicles and pollute like a real American!

now big bro sticks a wand up our tailpipes......

an apt anal analogy.....
