Default Wall Lights

Hello,

I have a question regarding wall lights.

At the minute I'am wiring some flats, the building inspector said because of ceiling vibration transfer I'm not allowed ceiling lights anywhere, only wall lights. My questions are:

1.) What height can you put wall lights? Any height?
2.) As wall lights don't give off as much light effectively as ceiling lights how many wall lights should I have per room? considering the rooms are just standard size rooms.
3.) What wattage lights should I use?
4.) Are there any regs regarding wall lights?

Thank all.

Sam

My first question would be asking the building inspector where he is coming up with that from. It sounds pretty odd to me

Very strange. Wall sconces are mostly decorative. I usually put them at 80 inches when I can't talk the customer out of them.

Another option is wall troffers with their openings up, holding florescent fixtures. They are about as good as anything else. I install them about six inches down from the ceiling. Come to think of it, I seldom ever put up ceiling lights in anyplace except hallways and laundry rooms and sometimes kitchens. I even resist installing lights on fans!

What happened? Somebody forget to nail the joists and trusses?

I think my first move would be to ask him kindly where that's at in the regs. It sure sounds like he's making that up as he goes along.

Answer to your question.... see what BC want or suggest. They created the problem! and how flimsy must that ceiling be???? assuming of course that it is to Building regs? If not then that must be BCs prob surely

Ah... makes perfect sense now. When he said "flats" I immediately looked to see where he was from and I saw "Hampshire" but I read "New Hampshire".

I sure would hate to be in a place where the ceiling vibrates that much. Good grief guys what kind of engineering do you all have over there?! James Bond has all those cool toys and you guys can't even keep a ceiling from vibrating so badly you can't hang a light fixture on it?

Another reason I can't use ceiling lights is because ceiling are concrete and have been dropped lower to house insulation and anti vibration ceiling tracks, therefore building inspector said to low for ceiling lights!

Fire codes may be an issue as well. Installing a ceiling light may penetrate a fire-rated assembly, and 'normal' boxes & lights may break that assembly.
