A co-worker of mine was doing wallpack lights about 30' up a wall outdoors. He was looking for a way to hold the lights against the wall with one hand and use the other hand to mark the holes so he could drill them. He decided to use spray paint THROUGH the fixture, onto the wall.
My question is, is he a hack? And what are your thoughts on his method?

I guess it works, easier than running a bit through them while holding them.

I'd make a template out of the box the came in, and use that to mark all my holes. No need to carry each fixture up there to mark.

It didn't work, he said it made a huge mess in the fixture, and paint ran down the wall, make the hole mark very big... Hack.

At that point why didn't he just use a sharpie/pencil?
It seems you really aren't cutting out any steps using the spray paint just adding costs and, as you mentioned, unneeded mess.

Do they make a sharpie with a 1" end?

I don't quite understand you.
I hold the fixture with my level on it then I trace the outside edge of the hole. Then I put the fixture down and drill in the center of my circles...

We usually do too. The problem is that these wallpacks are huge, awkward and heavy. And the holes in the fixtures are deep and we cant get a pencil through.

I would also like to suggest making the hole on wall pack larger so if the holes you drill on the wall are not perfect it can easily be corrected.

Drill a larger hole (big enough for a pencil) an use washers. Makes it easy to level if you screw up drilling.
