Default What year code book should i be studying

I currently do not own a copy of the NEC book. I no its bad...but im young and just an employee. So it hasnt really been a necessity for me.

I want to purchase it and study it to prepare for the future when i go for my C-10 in a few years.

It would make sense to get the new 2011 version right? sorry if thats a stupid question.

Your not an electrician unless you own at least one copy of an NEC... Just kidding! Depends on where you live. I use to live in Chicago so I owned the Chicago Elec Codebook and the NEC( but I never touched it untill it took the JW test) but as for the what code year, I'd go with the 2011 handbook.

Depends on what edition your local AHJs are enforcing.

Get one of the NEC Handbooks. It basically tells you how to use the code book in layman's terms. You don't need the most current edition for the C-10 test. Most of the test is based on 2002 & 2005 NEC.

I just received my 2011 NEC handbook today. $124. from Amazon. I'd go that route and maybe buy a used 2008 code book if you can get one cheap.

California just adopted the 08'code, thats what you should start with as it will be at least 3(maybe 5) years before the 11' is in use

Has the the CSLB adopted the 2008 for C-10 test? When i took mine in 1997 they were using 1987 NEC material. Not that you can use the NEC in the test anyways. Closed book test.

Forget that!

The kid has LIMITED funds.

Figure out when your going to sit for the exam -and what code cycle they are going to be testing on. I'd buy the 2011 and study that. You should get enough right to pass, so don't get hung up on the fact that you don't get a 100% You just need a J card.

Short of that - I'd call 1-888-NEC-CODE and check what they can do for you. Might be the best phone call you ever make!

Not if your jurisdiction is using the 2005 code. Your answers will be wrong.
Depends on the cycle that your testing for.

The tests are geared for the correct answer. not the better solution answer.
