When you need to call a service man..
My father has a SEARS electric dryer that is not drying the clothes like it used to.
Chances are it is a bad heating element, but I don't have the time to try and fix it.
So I called SEARS and scheduled a service appointment.
"The technician will be there on 2/10 and the fee will be $139.00 plus parts."
Then the phone guy tells me I am "lucky" and that SEARS is running a special on a washing machine "tuneup" for $34.99.. regularly $139.00
The technician inspects belts, hoses, and electrical connections. He also lubricates mechanical components, BLA BLA BLA.. NO THANKS
When do we become technicians?

You can call yourself that right now. When you order you next pack of business cards and change it from Electrician to Technicians. And here is your slogan...............

I have a client with a loud, less than two year old Kenmore steam washer. (rebranded Whirlpool) I happened to see the work order. It will cost well over $1000. to repair. There was even an extra charge for an extra guy because the units are stacked. I cannot imagine that washer cost much more than $1500. But it's none of my business.

So did the guy come and fix it? Maybe the exhaust vent is filled with lint. That would definitely cause it to stop drying clothes. Check that before the SEARS guy comes and let me know what happens.

Clogged dryer venting is a leading cause of fires. It also cuts efficiency, costing money.

Sears knows what it takes to send a man and a truck and charge for it, take it or leave it. When we do the same, eventually there will be enough work for all of us.
P.S. If you clean out the dryer duct with a yard blower you can charge $139.00.

So whats the problem with being a 'Technician' ?
You put it in, you should be able to fix it.
If someone else puts it in, You should be able to fix it.
If you install, you should be able to dissect. And fix it.
If there are no new installs. as seems to be the case.
Someone must be able to support what is out there.
What I see here, some are too proud to support. And can only be usefull on install.
Very short sited. Swallow the MACHO.
ADAPT! Evolution.
Sorry Guys.

Ten companies with eight employees each in a given area will have a much easier time keeping all 80 of those technicians working at $139/hr than forty companies with two employees each cutting throats ever will.
It's not much more complicated than than that.

While you have it out- check the two T-stats- Remove the back cover-(Vacuum it too. all the pieces come right off 1/4") they are about the size of a 1/2 dollar. they should be closed. My dryer 20 yrs and going- changed the T-stats twice. sears had some good stuff then.
