Drug testing may be required also

It was just lots of paper work to fill out and then wait.
I have worked in a country style, medium and maximum.
And do not believe anything a prisoner tell you.
Listen to everything a gurad tells you.

Speaking of Back ground checks ...
Funny story
The company I used to work for did a lot of prison / jail work.
We were starting a new jail project and everyone had to complete paperwork for a background check. When you were approved you were notified to come to the existing jail security office for photo's and to get you ID's.When I went to get my photo and ID there was a group of about 20 people there.
They called a name and you went and had your picture taken, then waited for it to be processed.
They called this one guy's name, he stands up and walks over to get his picture taken. Instead of having his picture taken, 2 state troopers stepped up and put him him handcuffs and arrested him! Seems the stupid jacka** had some outstanding warrants.

Do not call the officers " Guards". They are officers.
Do not take anything from an inmate
Do Not give anything to an Inmate
Do Not run
Do not argue with an inmate
Do not touch ANYTHING that your not supposed to !!!!! Prisons are filthy!!!
Most of all keep in mind that those unlucky souls that are incarcerated there are INNOCENT.
Prison work will train your body into only taking a dump at certain times of the day also.

I repaired some light fixtures inside a holding cell at the local police department. That's the extent of my "prison work". They were ordinary wraps, but they were mounted about 16 feet off the floor. No way anyone could even get to them anyhow to monkey with them.

Now see, this is the wrong way of thinking. You don't have to be the fastest person on the site. You only have to be faster than the slowest person on the site.

I can remember saying to a guy one time many years ago, "If anything bad happens, I'm going to kick you in the nuts so that you're stuck here a minute and I'm gonna run like hell". We were working in one of those ghetto places where nefarious people came to donate blood for crack money. Lots of scary looking people lined up in the waiting room.

That's no joke. When I got security clearance to work at the FBI building I was warned ahead of time by my super that if I had any warrants (even local traffic ones) they would notify the proper agency.

I worked several times in "the walls" which was the name for the Mo State Prison in Jefferson City. Going in and out the sallyport was an hour each way and if you hit the shift change it could take longer. An escort weas not always available so more waiting. Also if they were moving a segregated prisoner you had to wait.
I helped build the Algoa center and in the final days even before prisoners arrived we were put through the same hoops.Four hours of production was about average in an eight hour day.
