You crazy Canadians
(copied from the other thread I started)
I was in Ontario a few weeks ago on vacation and of course I had to go into a Canadian Home Depot just to see the differences. Naturally, I was checking out your wiring practices too.
I have to say I like some of your Canadian practices, like:
-"Loomex" (romex) on metal spools. Same with THHN (I guess you call that T90 up there). We used to have metal spools but manufacturers switched away from them a long time ago.
-Metal device boxes similar to ours but larger cubic inch capacity. They are called various things here, like gems, old works, sectionals, etc. Yours are much better.
-Main breaker panels with a main breaker compartment to isolate it from the rest of the panel.
-Marrettes. I wish we could get those here. I like them because they seem to have a much wider range than our standard wirenuts and they have a copper spring.
-Red jacketed "loomex" for use with heater circuits containing a black and red in the cable.
-Very limited use of #12 wire in residential.
-600 volts. Way cool.
-PVC conduit everywhere outside. And that PVC jacketed "Teck" cable is pretty nice too.
--And my favorite - brand new Federal Pioneer (that would be FPE for us)!
Otherwise it seems you basically follow American practices with some quirks.

I'll be the first to admit that I beat dead mushy horses and then some, but the "hack" thing is getting old. I'm the only one who can call myself a hack.

Glad you had a good visit to 'my' country. I only hope you saw more of it than a Home Depot, tho. And yes, we do have our share of 'hacks' up here as well, lol.

Oh yes, quite a bit. Saw a lot of Ontario, well at least the parts where most of the population lives.
