i have recently become unemployed and need to get back to work asap! if any of you are hiring or know of anyone who is i would be very grateful if you could let me know. I am a 17th edition sparks with experience in all areas with own van and tools and would be willing to travel.

Have yo thought about Australia? given that their economy is going through the roof and is the only developed nation to avoid the recession and who's interest rates just went up yesterday, they are desperate for electricians. There is a guy on this site from australia (i think he is called shakey pete). He has a lot to say about Aussies, It would be a great place to work if you pass the following entry criteria (from his comments).

Do you drink a lot
Can you work while under the influence
are you gay
do you like wearing gloves and
can you swear fluently in pidgeon english
Oh! and are you an electrician.

Look him up dude, honest he might be able to help out...he might even marry you so you can become a citizen.
