Just tell the boss you are not qualified to climb and ask for him to send you to a class before work starts. If he calls you a pu$$y, tell him "you are what you eat D*CK"

Tree climbing gaffs are not good on poles and vice versa.

i would like to learn to climb poles and look like the klein tool logo.

i would probably buy klein climbing gear. i dont know of any other brand.

URDlineman.com sells lineman stuff.

now that i think about it i dont think many electricians in massachusetts have a need for pole climbing gear. i got a couple friends at nstar that will do that work for me

i seen a video of a guy falling off of a pole at a lineman climbing competition. he didnt get hurt but if he hugged that pole on the way down he would have a serious problem on his hands. i cant imagine the pain all those spinters would cause. most linemen i see anyway dont climb poles they have a bucket truck. i seen a verizon guy climb a few years ago but now i just see them use a truck too. might be a dying art just like the rest of our trade

Sounds good. Work half the year, summers off, good pay and benefits, but then there's that pesky little problem of having to be in a union. On second thought...I'll pass.

Having a boss that asks you to climb a pole without proper training is a moron.

Having an employee who would do it without training is just as bad.. keep you feet on the ground

Ok I know some of you guys will blast me on this one but.... SOME of the new hunting climber tree stands can be used on poles or thats what I understand. The climbers come with a harness and if you get one that the daimeter of the pole will fit(if you go this way get a good quaility stand) you should be able to use it. Takes a whole lot less practice than lineman pole climbing. This may not be the safest way but I belive it would be safer than the lineman way. Ok guys blast away.

If you use them, practice. A gaff in the calf can really ruin your day and leave some nasty scars.
